Having attended higher learning institutions for over 6 years, my drive for more education is apparent. Attending a private liberal arts college taught me to push myself to be the very best I could be. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics with an emphasis on Greek, and a minor in English. I tutored for a January term Beginning Greek class, as well as whenever students stopped in the office and needed help with Greek or Latin. I worked with the Minnesota Literacy Council tutoring adult learners in basic math and reading skills. I attempted multiple approaches with each person until we found one that allowed the learner to make sense of the symbols and language. I encouraged the ability to work at the material until the learner could make it his/her own in some way. I also trained new employees each month in the use of a software program at a pharmaceutical company. Employees were required to learn the program regardless of experience and ability with computer programs. I like to teach ESL from the Communicative Competence ideal. Integrating reading writing speaking listening into thematic units. Learning a new language requires hands on experience. If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail. I also believe reading should be taught at the appropriate reading level for comprehensions sake. If a reader is below the 98% error level, they will not succeed.
