Tutor for Regular Elementary and Special Education

Multi-sensory, positive reinforcement approach with a focus on student involvment by the use of manipulatives for a hands on approach. I have also employed behavior modification programs in the classroom setting when necessary.
I have recently retired after 30+ years as an elementary special and regular education teacher. For the past 15 years I have also worked as a tutor for the city of White Plains. I have done extensive private tutoring for the past 20 years. For 17 years I worked as an elementary special education classroom teacher at New York Hospital in an out-patient day treatment program. This program involved elementary school age children who displayed severe emotional and academic difficulties and were unable to function in a regular school setting.

A Little Bit About Me...

When I started working at Colchester High School in Vermont, I initially identified myself much more with the students than the teachers and staff. Back in high school, I went out of my way to rebel against the school. In Vermont I quickly learned that there is a big difference-- that as an adult now, I am on the "other side," but can use this closeness I feel with the adolescent mindset to help with the learning process for the kids. I am a very descriptive and thorough teacher. I enjoy explaining subjects first, then writing examples on the board to encourage note-taking. Then I like students to think of their own examples. I like to ensure that I am very clear in delivering my point, because I know how some students will remain quiet, even if they do not understand completely. If a student struggles to comprehend, and then I move on to the next topic too quickly, it is easy for that student to fall behind. I find it very important for students to hear what I'm talking about, then take notes on the topic, and then offer their own insight.
