Hello! My name is Evan Levine and I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in music performance at the University of Michigan. Originally from New Jersey, I have been teaching students between the ages of 6-18 for over 8 years in both private and group settings. I have taught a range of music styles, including; Rock, Jazz, Pop, Country and Classical music. I am also proficient in Music Theory and Music History and would be able to supplement that with instrument instruction.
I believe that learning repertoire that the student is interested in is the fastest way to develop a passion for music. Positive encouragement is key, and I believe the teachers' job is to guide their students in what they want to do. I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.
I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
