I have the take a learning styles test in our very first meeting to see what style of learner the are. I then concentrate on teaching them by what learning style they are.
I have tutored K-12 students, as well as college students. I tutor math for K-12 students and business courses and math for college students. During the last twelve years I have worked within the public school system in both Arkansas and Florida. Between 1998 and 2000 I worked as a substitute for the Cabot School District. Between the years of 2000 and 2005 I worked with the Special Education teacher at Landmark Elementary in Little Rock, AR to ensure student achievement. In 2005 I moved to Ocala, FL and worked for the Hammett L. Bowen Elementary until June 2010. When working one on one with a student I practice a few different methods of teaching and whichever one they feel the most comfortable with and I receive the most attentiveness from, is the one that I continue to use. For example, some students prefer that you walk them through a lesson, go over a few practice problems and then let them work on assignments, knowing that they have you to assist them when needed. Others might want to jump into the assignment and when a question arises, they ask you to refer to the lesson to help them find the solution.
