I used to hate math, now I love it.

I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.
i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.

My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : Expert a tutoring the SAT Verbal. Many of my students have gotten scores above 700, some of them perfect scores (although most score in the 600's after working with me for a few months). First, you will learn to spot trick answers from a mile away and eliminate them. Second, you will learn which questions to answer first in the boring reading passages WITHOUT EVEN READING THE READING PASSAGES. Third, you will learn that you only have to be MINIMALLY AWARE of what the boring reading passages are saying to answer almost every question right. That's because there are specific things the passages ARE saying, and there are things the passages ARE NOT saying. You will learn to tell what they are NOT saying and pick the right answer. You do not have to be Ivy League smart to do well on the SAT Verbal. You will also learn that there is a BIG difference in prep books and that buying the right prep books can make as much as a 200-point difference in your verbal score. Finally, you will buy the book of 8 genuine SAT tests that the company that makes the SAT publishes, and we will practice taking real SATs under legit timed conditions, just like the SAT...so you will see proof positive you are improving as you invest the time practicing. Your first hour of tutoring is free (even if you don't continue) so you can see just how much tutoring is going to help you. Let's get started soon, as raising your score a lot takes time. Despite what gimmicky books and expensive coaching programs claim, there is no shortcut to raising your verbal score and no substitute for putting the work in and spending the time practicing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to work with students of all ages. I am a patient teacher and try to tailor my teaching style to the progress of my student. I prefer to promote understanding through the use of work sheets, tutorials, and real world examples, rather then simply relying on memorization. I have a good sense of humor and believe that constructive learning environments are both challenging and light-hearted.

More About This Tutor...

I believe that all students can learn if they are taught in a style that is most conducive to their learning style and motivations. To make that happen for each of my students, I try to assess their specific learning styles early on and get to know what drives them and their goals. By teaching in a method that is more individualized to them I grab their attention, keep it and impart skills and lessons quickly and easily. Also, by focusing on the positive habits and actions the students take, providing proper motivations, and having continued discussions about goals I am able to increase the student's self-motivation, confidence, and independence.
My education experience spans many areas. I have taught in middle and high school classrooms, have tutored for public school programs, tutored at after school learning centers, tutored in church programs, and managed a learning center ... read more

I thoroughly enjoy teaching students at various ages and stages of development. I consider myself to be very creative, and I try to give the students as much hands-on experience as possible. I am constantly seeking feedback from the student in terms of how well I am presenting the subject matter, so my methods of teaching will vary. I am always open to new ideas. Failure is not a word in my teaching vocabulary. I will always find a way to reach and teach my student in such a way that learning and application are maximized.

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.
