I graduated from Mount Union College in May 2006 with a BA in History and a double minor in Adoloescent to Young Adult Education and American Studies. Throughout high school I was a teacher's assistant helping with students in class during my study halls as well as working one on one with students for extra study skills. In the past few years I have tutored students in elemtary math, middle school reading and writing, and even my own students before and after school in social studies. I currently teach Civics and Economics which is an EOC course and I have taught this for 6 years now. I love teaching and showing people how easy accounting can be and how much it helps you in real life situations. Most students get overwhelmed easily with double entry accrual accounting. I find it best to relate the material directly to the students personal life purchase and income habits. This way they can have a hands on approach and hopefully find the rules easy and helpful in daily financial situations.

When I approach a student I've never worked with, my first priority is to make them feel comfortable by letting them see that I am a very nice, friendly, and compassionate person that they might like to have as a friend. Next I try to get them to tell me about themselves in some way (what they've been working on, their favorite subjects) to try to encourage them to speak freely with me about what they're thinking. Then, after personal rapport is established, I begin my academic approach to tutoring by finding out how they think based on their interests or common themes, and I try to connect the material to these things. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that any child can learn and that we all have various learning styles. We just have to find the style that is best for optimum learning. Some of us are visual learners and some are auditory learners, and many of us learn with a combination of styles. I believe that by working with students to finding their unique and individual learning style a tutor is the most effective.
