I tailor the experience of reading to each child so that they experience both success and challenge. Learning language patterns, word recognition, and decoding are all skills I teach. I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. I want to make sure the student understands fully so I would also be asking the student questions just to ensure he or she knows the material well. For English, I would focus on practicing and discussion. Since it is a langauge, I focus more on practicality. I would also talk to the student and discuss whatever he is having trouble with so that I can give him or her tips to improve.
