I am currently involved in the public school system as a Literacy Tutor for grades k-3. I have earned a BA in Journalism and English and have decided to continue on to pursue my Masters degree in Education. I have been trained in specific reading strategies that can help improve fluency, phonemic awareness, and phonics; as well as vocabulary and text comprehension. I love working with children. I believe they all have the potential to be great at whatever they choose – sometimes they just need that extra hand- and that is what I can offer. I am patient, easy going, kind and encourage laughter. My goal is to engage children in the things they are naturally interested in and to make learning fun.

Teaching has always been my passion & I enjoy every minute. I believe that all children can learn given the oppurtunity to learn verbally, kinesthetically or whatever way they learn best. I am an Elementary Education graduate from the University of Minnesota. I have experience teaching students with emotional behavioral disorders, students who were at high risk for failure and students in inner city schools. I have purposely taken teaching jobs that are challenging and found that I take pleasure and personal fulfillment in being challenged and I perform well in a demanding environment. I believe in differentiated instruction and helping students find the way that individual learns best. I also use active learning which enables students to talk, listen, read, write, and reflect on content through problem-solving exercises, simulations, modeling, and role playing.

I believe in a teaching style that reflects a student's learning style. Whether they learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing it is important to cater to the student. My teaching style works around this philosphy and tends to be a combination of all 3 styles. Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. I also have 3 years of experience helping children by teaching swimming lessons. Assisting my 15-year-old sister with her school work is also a regular activity.
