A Little Bit About Me...

I was valedictorian of my high school class. I was also good in sports and music. I went to college at Iowa State University and finished at the University of South Dakota with a major in communication disorders and a minor in psychology. I have a strong training background. I have held jobs in which I was a manager, which required me to train staff. I also taught computer classes (Microsoft, Internet, Basic PC) at Western Iowa Tech for a few years. I earned A's throughout my high school career; and I excelled in college in math, science and English, though I would no longer be comfortable teaching high-level science.

Having grown up with a family of educators, there was never any doubt I would become a teacher. I hold a MS degree in Educational Administration and a BS degree in English and have taught 26 years of high school, primarily seniors. In addition to classroom teaching, I have taught numerous ACT prep classes evenings and was a tutor for Sylvan Learning Center. A Little Bit About Me...

In addition to my formal education, I have extensive experience in government relations and health care policy, this broad experience has allowed me to effectively teach a variety of subjects at an undergraduate level. I have taught classes in public administration, public policy and grant writing but also have taught both micro and macro economics, American government and basic web design.
I believe that effective teaching should stimulate critical thinking skills. I like to use the Socratic method of teaching by asking students questions. In my classes I frequently ask students .."what do you think?" as a means for them to share their ideas with other students and stimulate new ideas. Education should be more than rote memorization, but rather a gaining an understanding of concepts and being able to apply those concepts in a real world context.
