My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : I have excellent strategies for interpreting and analyzing reading passages, building vocabulary, and teaching sentence structure (for sentence completion). I also did quite well on the Verbal portion of the SAT, so my methods are tried and tested!

I am a patient and understanding teacher. I enjoy fostering close relationships with my students so that I can cultivate my methods to best suit their learning style.
I have a degree in English and Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and have two years experience writing for the Daily Tar Heel. I have also completed internships with the local NPR station, WUNC, and with the organization AGRADU (Advocates for Grassroots Development in Uganda). I am highly organized, responsible, and driven, and am very personable. I work well with children and young adults; I am the oldest of five children and during high school and college, I worked as a dance teacher and nanny. I'm currently working on publishing my first novel.

Professional Exam Prep and Subject Tutoring

During my time as Head Tutor at UNCA, regardless of department, I tutored over 200 students in mathematics and physics. Of those students, at least 80% saw an increase of at least one letter grade and at least 20% saw an increase by two letter grades. Many students I tutored in one subject came back to be for tutoring in the other. For many of my students I served as an invaluable mentor who guided them from their earliest days as a college freshman to the day the walked across the stage and earned their degree. Over the past five years, I have helped more than 100 students gain admission to their dream colleges and have averaged a score increase of approximately 260 points for the SAT and 6.5 points for the ACT. I have personally played a role in the lives of students who have earned admission into such institutions as Stanford, Duke, UVA, Cal Tech, Georgia Tech, UNC, and UPenn. ... read more

I enjoy working with students and watching their growth and development academically. My approach to each student is different because I understand each will need a different approach. Initially with each student I identify his or her strengths and weaknesses with the material. While building on their strengths, I attempt to change their perspective towards the course material that seems difficult. For example, if a student is struggling with multiplication but has superior addition skills, I will use addition to help them understand multiplication.
As a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I have a proven track record of success. I am currently pursuing a MS Degree at Full Sail University and my current GPA is a 4.0. I love working with children. I've taught acting at the Durham Arts Council for three years. The duties from that position included directing students in performances which I helped them create. The plays were written around themes chosen by the camp director. So, in essence, the children and I would research those themes and develop stories which I would then turn into plays using my expertise. Those plays would be performed every two weeks for the entire summer. I was responsible for preparing three classes for this project simultaneously.
From my experiences teaching acting in Durham NC I know education can I know that learning can be fun. I hold a Bachelor's from UNC Greensboro where I majored in Psychology and theater arts, but also took many literature credits to fulfill a special educational program in which I was placed. this program was for gifted students. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.
I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.

I loved teaching since my first teaching experience in 1974 that iinvolved working as a long-term substitute at the Omega School in Madison, Wisconsin. The Omega School, an alternative hiigh school that occupied a few rooms in an an old office buiilding, helped high risk students who couldn't fit into a regular high school environment obtain their GED. Some students were gifted but unable to adjust to the regimens of regular high school. Others stole cars or acted out in other ways. My next teachiing experience was in 1975 as a teaching assistant at the University of California, Irvine. T.A.'s taught their own classes and were responsible for lectures, grading, assignments. I taught composition and literature. I loved it and felt at home. My supervisor, now a professor at Duke, told me I was a "natural teacher." I've been teaching ever since. I've taught journalism, science writing, huma ... read more

I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. When the comfort level is established we then develop a mutual-learning relationship, as I can learn from the student just as much as he or she can learn from me.
I have tutored throughout school and into college. During college, I mentored and tutored two young girls from an under-privileged school for a local program. After college, I did some private consulting, helping people write admissions essays and prepare for the ACT and other standardized tests. I've also worked as a Google Answers Researcher and as a grants adviser to nonprofit foundations.

A Little Bit About Me...

Learning is an incredibly individual phenomenon. I believe patience and creativity are essential to helping children learn. A concept can be explained in many different ways and modalities and the key is to find which styles of learning are best suited to your child. With support and encouragement, I will help your child gain confidence by building upon their strengths and by presenting topics with which they have more difficulty in a way that best complements the way in which they learn.
As the oldest of three children, I have informally tutored for many years. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked with a community college student and aided him in passing his Algebra course. My interests in education are diverse. I have a liberal arts degree which drew heavily upon my writing skills. Additionally, I was completing my prerequisites for medical school which require ... read more

To teach math, the teacher has to know math and be able to teach it to the students. All learners are capable of learning math. The challenge for the teacher is to connect well with the students and teach in a manner that is in synch with their learning styles. Understanding and striking a rapport with the students is therefore, paramount to arriving at the desired outcome for both the teaching and learning process. With a passion for teaching, I have cultivated patience, good listening skills and clear communication to create constructive learning for the students -for to teach is to touch and change the learner's life. It is my goal to make that change a positive one for my students by engaging them in active math learning. Showing them how to fish and putting a fishing pole in their hands (not the fish), they learn math and how to learn it- math learning in not a spectator sport!

For the past two years, I was the high school English teacher in a small, rural Alaskan village located on the Yukon River. This teaching position was very challenging--I had to teach several subjects, such as English, social studies, geography, art, keyboarding, drama, journalism, and digital photography. Since the high school was so small, (30 students), much of my teaching was one-on-one instruction. I have strong English skills, as well as a minor in history and a diverse liberal arts undergraduate education. Currently I am working on my Masters of Education degree, through a distance education program.
I feel very passionate about education and learning. I think the key to teaching is to engage students, and make content interesting and relevant to their lives. I truly believe that the ideal teaching situation is via one-on-one instruction, because I feel students unders ... read more

As a graduate student I had the pleasure to both teach and tutor. I was a Teacher's Assistant for the Politics of the Policy Process for two semesters. As a TA, I led 20 students in section meetings, focusing on writing and communication strategies. Additionally, I tutored student athletes at Duke University for one year. I tutored students in numerous subject areas, including statistics, public policy, economics, basic writing, and political science. Finally, I have recently begun volunteer tutoring for 6th-8th graders in Durham.
My experiences as a tutor and instructor have given me some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I believe that tutoring provides a unique opportunity for an instructor to help a student with not only the subject matter, but also with study strategies, priority setting, and building self confidence.
