I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.
