A Little Bit About Me...

As a NOAA Corps Officer, I helped teach new personnel many facets of our day-to-day operations, from instructing new officers on getting their Officer of the Deck qualifications to preparing new survey techs for their hydrographer-in-charge qualification, and new deck hands assigned to my watch how to drive the ship and steer accurate survey lines. At Embry-Riddle, I often tutored friends and classmates, since I had a more advanced background than most of my peers.
My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". I enjoy teaching and explaining many things to individuals and small groups, of all ages, although my tutoring experience is somewhat limited. I can communicate in different styles with different people, based on how I see they can learn most effectively. Seeing the "Aha!" expression when a student has grasped a topic, especially when he or she has been frustrated, is one of my greatest rewards. Especially in math, I believe that many people find it difficult because somebody told them that math was difficult (and they believed that), or because they missed one step along the way, and everything thereafter was impenetrable.
