Competence Starts with Confidence

My teaching style is based on student-centered, social-emotional learning, where my core values are focused around differentiated, individualized instruction based on the learning profiles and interests of my students. NO two students learn the same and it is extremely important for me as an educator to meet the student "where they are," and utilize techniques and strategies that motivate learners to be invested participants in this partnership.
Ever since I was in Honors English in high school back in the seventies (yes, I am a "well seasoned" teacher versus "an old teacher"), I knew that I wanted to dedicate my college years to taking every writing and literature class I could get my hands on. Once my composition was chosen as the "model essay" in my English Comp 101 class at Adelphi University, and was read by students for many years after I graduated, I knew that I meant to be ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I always knew I wanted to help people. While working in a pre-school it hit me, I loved working with children and watching them learn and helping them achieve success. It was then that I decided to return to school to become a teacher in elementary education. During my student teaching experience, I learned how to adapt lessons to fit individual student needs, evaluate my instruction and change it where it was necessary. I also gained experience in how to model instruction for students and best of all, I greatly enjoyed making a comfortable, excitable and enjoyable learning experience for all students!
I love teaching and working with children! I feel that if a child can see, touch, taste, and/or use their body in a lesson than they can really grab the concept that is being taught and be able to connect it to real world experiences. I am easygoing person who is dedicated and passio ... read more

Some people learn by talking, some tactically by doing, some visually by example. It depends on the student, or I devise a presentation that involves all three ways of presenting the information. I believe that learning and understanding the value of what is being learned is as important as the content.
I am a doer who has shared his knowledge and experience in a variety of ways. I am a very well organized person who can multitask and prioritize extremely well, however to me this important but yet secondary aspect of teaching is next to assisting children develop their social, communication, developmental and learning skills. Creativity in this job is a must and I feel you need to be on the same level as your students to engage them in what you want to teach them. Not all students learn in the same fashion so I feel teaching the same facts but in different ways to target your audience is very key in education. From reading, to visual arts and verbal communication, I feel that they are all just as important as the next one and I would encompass them all into my style of teaching.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.
As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.

A Little Bit About Me...

I primarily use the Socratic Method (question and answer) as my teaching style. I believe that asking students the right questions helps them to learn the information. Also, in certain instances I believe it helps the learning process if the subject matter can be related to an area of interest. I believe this can be a key component in a student's understanding of a subject.
I served as a tutor, primarily for English, History, and writing, for three years while attending Southern Vermont College. Following graduation, I worked for three years as a paraprofessional for Leland & Gray Union High School. While working in this capacity there were several one on one situations similar to the relationship that exists between tutors and their students. In addition to the aforementioned subjects I tutored while in college, I also assisted students in other areas such as basic math and genera ... read more

I believe the key to understanding and learning is to make learning fun and memorable. I'm a strong believer in constructivist learning and believe that children need to explore to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because I have had to meet the needs of so many different students in so many different environments, I am flexible with teaching methods. A lack of resources overseas drove me to be creative and exercise methods of experiential learning: hands-on and engaged learning. I believe in creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for students, with some room for fun. I acknowledge that every student possesses a different learning style and I strive to compliment that, especially while tutoring. I maintain high expectations and expect considerable progress. My hope is that armed with an education, youth will be incorporated into more decision making around the world.
I graduated with honors from a formal university, where I tutored fellow classmates; however, I gained most of my tutoring and teaching experience overseas, in a universal classroom. I have taught youth and a ... read more
