More About This Tutor...

It has been my experience that integrating the various teaching approaches that research has shown to be effective gets consistent results across student groups. However, I have also found that hands on learning seems to lead to high efficacy in real world work related tasks as opposed to a strictly theoretical approach.
I believe deeply in the power of education to change lives, which is why I have dedicated my life to this purpose. I spent 5 years as a teacher and coach in the country of Vietnam. During this time I taught English as a second language, coached soccer and chess, and launched a sports training business during which time I trained all staff on work processes and procedures. I have returned to the United States to complete a secondary teaching certificate in the subject areas of Business, Marketing, and History as well as a master's degree in education with an emph ... read more

I firmly believe that a good education must be adaptable, flexible, and incorporate a variety of learning styles if it is to be of maximum benefit to students. When teaching, I speak with my students about the kinds of activities they feel assist them most in retaining information as well as observing their learning style independently. I do my best to include activities that incorporate visual, kinesthetic, and oral learners. School isn’t always fun and interesting; it is called “work” for a reason. However, if I can’t make it fun I can at least make it engaging and that is what I strive for. Every student can achieve if they are given the right tools, support network, and encouragement to do so.

I believe students will rise to the level of expectations set for them. I am a bit of a comedian, and I use humor to allay frustration in learning situations. I believe in setting goals and charting a specific path for reaching them, while being flexible enough to alter the path along the way. Praise and positive reinforcement are powerful tools when teaching challenging material, and I use them frequently.
I received a BA in General Business from WSU, and was honored as a Cum Laude graduate. The courses were varied and included a wide array of math application, from supply and demand curves to interest rate calculations. My classmates gave me the nickname "Webster" because I was frequently asked to edit their papers and to tutor them in several different subjects. I love working with teenagers, and watching their faces change when they really GET a concept for the first time!

More About This Tutor...

My approach is to incorporate multiple learning styles (visual, auditory and so on). I also like to incorporate skills training as part of a scenario when possible. Using techniques like appropriate background music, brief stretch breaks, having the children read to Sierra, my golden retriever, are all techniques that I would like to use. Teaching children would be a joy and very rewarding. I had trouble learning to read when I was young until I attended Mrs. Bird's class. She took the time to meet with me one-on-one and taught me to read and changed my life in the process. Seeing adult learners’ eyes light up when they "get it" have been some of the best times in my career. I would love to see that light in a child's eyes too.
My master's thesis was on computer-based training. My experience includes teaching end users and other trainers (train the trainer). Classroom train ... read more
