Turning your weakness into your strength

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

GED is one of my top subjects! Taught GED for many years in a classroom setting. I am very good in the math section, which is generally the most difficult for most students.

I have a BS in Education with a Comprehensive Science specialty - 7th to 12th grades. I have taught science in the classroom, but I changed after I got married to tutoring. In the past few years I have spent most of my time tutoring math and GED. This has been done in both a private and classroom setting. While teaching GED at Job Corps, my students were highly successful.
I like to cooperate with the student, finding their strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their chance of success. I am very careful to zero in on what the student needs and eliminate anything that is already known. In other words, I do not like to waste the learners time with facts that they know but concentrate on what needs to be learned.

I will teach them to the best of my ability and help them reach their full potential.

My basic teaching style is to get to know the child and his or her strengths, create a loving and safe space where he or she can experience self expression, exploration, making choices, problem solving, being aware of his or her skills and talents. Within this process, children can successfully and meaningfully organize and integrate material and information to be learned and used. I use lots of approaches to help with organizing and learning, not excluding movement, art, music, brain integration activities, and personally discovered stategies that work for each individual.
I am an experienced teacher, tutor, and study skills coach who believes in the giftedness of each and every child and person. Every child is exceptional and deserves to know there are no failures. A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate with an engineering related BS degree from North Carolina State University, my background intense in the maths and sciences. I have taught primarily chemistry and physical science for 3.5 years, but have also taught biology and earth science. With chemistry being so math driven, I am confident and competent at math subjects such as algebra and algebra II to name a few.
I consider myself a facilitator of information more than a teacher. Students must be accountable for their own learning.
