University professor with years of tutorong experience.

I try to me more personable than most instructors. Many students simply need another approach to a subject to understand the material. I actively find that perfect approach for an individual student.
I have taught and tutored since I was sixteen. I currently teach for USC, a few online universities, Syl. Learning Center, and am a Professional Writing Tutor. I teach all grades and university levels, but my specialties are AP Courses and university courses. I have taught everything from 4 yr olds phonics to College level writing and literature to basic maths and sciences to Calculus and Trig.

Journalism is one of my top subjects!

Worked more than a decade as a newspaper reporter/editor in the 1980s and 1990s. Primarily handled the local politics news beat, but ended up writing just about every kind of story. Served as an unofficial mentor and writing coach with several newspapers. Continue to write online and offline, for customers and for my own web sites.

I currently tutor a 9 year old and a 13 year old, both for reading and writing. I've taken early childhood education courses before, and worked hands on in a preschool, in which I put together lesson plans and taught to the class. I'm also the oldest of five, and grew up with a big family. My younger brother and sisters (ranging from 4-19 years old) are my absolute best friends, and one of the main reasons that I have such a love for children. I've worked as a lifeguard, so I am CPR knowledgeable (no longer "certified), and have even held various babysitting jobs in the past. Aside from all of the personal experience that I have had with child care and tutoring in the past, I can honestly say I hold a true passion for reading and writing. I have hundreds of books that fill all of the book shelves in my home, and numerous journals that I constantly find myself writing in. I'm very s ... read more

More About This Tutor...

During my undergraduate studies, I acquired a fond interest in the study of researching, writing, and grammatical skill. I received my BA in Mass Communications and minored in English. Initially, I served as a reporter for the campus newspaper, and gradually served as Editor for two years. Investigating, researching, and editing was my top priority within this position. I have mastered the skill of writing research papers, while also being able to effectively review and edit them simultaneously. Within those years, I have assisted reporters in their research and writing to ensure a successful publication.
Throughout my undergraduate studies, being able to effectively communicate with others was the primary factor. With this program of study, I have obtained the ability to constructively interact with others for positive results. All students learn differently, and will require a di ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Through my experience with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, I was expected to demonstrate a high level of expertise in my chosen field. As a writing emphasis major, I chose writing classes that focused on the principles of teaching writing and reading in a classroom setting. I also took several classes that focused on the student writer of today, and ways in which to-as an instructor-encourage students to want to read and write. All of these classes and experiences will help me as I hope to further my education and pursue a master's degree in teaching.
One of the most rewarding things about teaching is seeing the progress a student makes, whether it be quick or slow, and one of the great things about reading and writing is that it is a skill that can only be improved upon. Reading and writing is not something that is forgotten over the summer, and once something clicks with ... read more

Positive reinforcement is the key. When a student sees that an adult is taking an honest interest in them, then they are not only more willing to learn, but more able. Telling a child "I know you can do it" instead of "you can do better than that" is imperative. Even the most tempermental or unmotivated student can be helped as long as that personal connection is there. I have always found that boosting their self-confidence, and thus reducing their stress/frustration level can work wonders. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to connect with a child who has been labled "difficult" or "unwilling".
I have more than nineteen years of professional communications experience in the public and private sectors, and have excellent verbal and written communications skills. I have been involved with tutoring and mentoring programs in the past, and have been a volunteer ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned my BA in English Literature, which gave me amazing professional diversity, as well as exemplary writing skills. These skills were indispensable during my postgraduate work in Archaeology. During a five year career as a professional archaeologist I have authored many reports and presented academic papers at conferences. I have a keen awareness of how to introduce new students to complex information because I've had the opportunity to participate in teaching high school students and undergraduates about field archaeology and artifact analysis.
My teaching style is extremely dependent on the individual student, and what their particular situation calls for. As someone who struggled at the beginning of their academic career myself, I am very sensitive to such situations. I take incredible joy in learning, and I believe that any student can achieve this given the right app ... read more
