As a Sociology major and an accounting student at Longwood University, I was able to gain an understanding in a variety of areas from classes in business, sociology, anthropology, psychology, english, math and the sciences. I have excelled in writing financial as well as literary reports. I tutored many of my classmates while I was in college and was afforded the opportunity to substitute teach sociology when my professors were out due to illness or personal reasons. I believe that a student who lacks the basic fundamental skills in reading and mathematics will struggle to stay focused in class and continually be disruptive and ultimately stop attending school. My teaching style is consistently accommodating especially to these types of students. I like to show students that I am there for them and there isn't anything through my patience and sincerity they cannot learn. Over the past five years I have worked as a Teacher/Instructor both the the legal field and in the public school setting with students diagnosed as ED and LD as well as being displaced from the normal public school setting. For the past ten years, I have been teaching High School English. I have taught grades 9-12 in Literature, Composition and Standards of Learning in preparation for the state exams. I have taught inclusion classes involving students with numerous learning styles and have always met and exceeded the expectations of their parents. After retiring from the Navy I went to work in the school system as a security assistant. After one year I resigned and went to Norfolk State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a major concentration in Learning Disabled and a minor in Emotionally Disturbed. Ten years later I earned a Master's Degree in Education from Cambridge College. I have been a Special Education Teacher for the past 16 years teaching in the Virginia Beach City Schools. I have a Highly Qualified Certification in Middle school math and English. Currently I teach High School Life Skills Math and Algebra.
