My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I use a multisensory approach espoused by the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction. Sight, sound, and neurological pathways to develop reading skills are utilized.

I have been a special needs teacher (k-8 moderate disabilities) for seven years, and an Orton-Gillingham instructor for eight years. Prior to my certifications I worked as a volunteer in Boston, Weymouth, and Quincy schools. I earned a Bachelor's in Literature and history in 1993, and am confident about my ability to work with all types of students in all areas of academics. I am a teacher in a substantially separate classroom for children with emotional disabilities. I also work with autistic children each summer in a social skills program. I have co-taught in the general education classroom over the years, and consider myself experienced and well-schooled in all facets of special and general education. I have also tutored children with reading disabilities over the years with great success (no magic elixir, just hard work on the part of the students and my Orton-Gillingham practices). ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : As a dyslexic student myself, I have intimate knowledge of the possible difficulties with learning a new language.

During the last two years of my undergraduate career I worked as an Arabic and Economics tutor in the Academic Resource Center at Tufts University. With respect to Arabic, I worked with Beginner and Intermediate level students - extensively using Al-Kitaab. Being dyslexic, I have an intimate knowledge of the difficulties that dyslexic students face when learning a new language, especially with an abjad like Arabic. I also have considerable "teaching" experience due to my time working as a personal trainer.
As a student, I understand the importance of a good teacher. I always try and help the student find and correct their own mistakes, rather than merely giving them the corrections. I have found that the listening is one of the most important tools that a tutor has at their disposal: in my experience, the student knows where their weaknesses and difficulties lie, even if they are u ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My favorite thing about teaching is when my students finally understand and make a connection to what I have been teaching them. I believe that all children have the ability to be successful; it just takes the right approach and the right tools to connect to each student. I believe that a good teacher teaches to the many different learning styles of their pupils, and continues to provide challenging and engaging instruction. I am a patient, responsible, and respectful individual who loves children and helping them to reach their full potential.
As a professional educator it is my responsibility to make sure that all my students are given the skills and tools they need to help them to be successful in their next grade level. I currently teach AM/PM kindergarten which means I have to find fun and engaging ways to teach students all the skills they need to acquire in kindergarten i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating from Haverford College with a double major in physics and astronomy, I worked for three years as an astrophysics researcher at NASA and Harvard University. In 2000, I became a teacher and a tutor. Since that time, I have taught children of all ages and adults in a wide variety of subjects. From 2002-2003, I designed and taught my own courses in physics and Calculus at the Academy at Charlemont. From 2004-2006, I completed a two year graduate program in physics education at the University of California, Berkeley. I gathered extensive experience student teaching at urban schools in the Bay Area and participated in two research groups. For my Master's thesis, I developed a curriculum to teach modern physics at the high school level using computer technology and hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory activities. Since the fall of 2006, I have been working in public schools in Bo ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have often found that educators "believe all children can learn". Throughout my career I have put those words into practice. Since graduating from Boston College, I have worked with students who were at the highest level of the educational spectrum and those who were not given the opportunities or the attention they needed to show their true academic capabilities. I believe in understanding where students are before you decide where they need to go, and that necessitates careful listening to the student. I am patient, thoughtful, and thorough, though my best character trait is that I have a way of making students know that I believe they can succeed.
Education is very much my vocation. I began teaching and tutoring during high school, and I have worked with students in every grade from pre-school through freshman year of college. I studied history as an undergraduate because ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that in order to be a truly exceptional teacher, one must put an effort into getting to know their students as an individual. It is important to design lessons that will compliment a student's personal learning style and reflect their interests. I think that learning can be demonstrating in several different capacities. Students should be encouraged to ask questions about their world and explore their natural curiosities. Students should not be afraid to ask questions or to ask for further clarification. They should not be fearful of making a mistake. Mistakes should be used as an essential tool in the learning process. I strive to make a positive impact in the lives of each student.
In May 2008, I received my BA in Elementary Education and Sociology. Upon graduating, I took a summer job working as an Aid for a Collaborative Program. In December 2008, I was hired ... read more

As a four-year teacher, I have had the opportunity to create my own philosophy based on my experience. I have taught both regular and special ed. children and have the same philosophy for all my students. I truly believe that every child is capable of learning and as a teacher; I need to identify the best approach to meet the needs of each child. Once I get to learn about their learning style, I can accommodate their needs more efficiently. Every child is unique and has his/her own needs and abilities and deserves to be treated fairly. . I want the students to feel at ease within the classroom and not timid in the learning process. I teach as a constructivist where students not only learn, but internalize their own knowledge. Everything that I teach the children has a purpose. I also use alternative forms of assessment to assess ones students progress throughout the year. This i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Talking with students and analyzing their work samples determines their needs. I ask students to complete a "multiple intelligence" survey to determine their learning strengths. In designing delivery of services I incorporate specific strategies to complement their learning styles. For example, a visual/spatial learner would benefit from drawing pictures to represent vocabulary definitions. I also incorporate a "self-talk" dialogue in our sessions helping students learn how to formulate content questions to assist them in clarifying their understanding of new information.
With a Master of Education in Special Needs I acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to adapt instructional practices for diverse learners. Working in partnership with the child, parent(s), and school districts I developed meaningful learning activities addressing the specific academic needs of the child. I h ... read more

I believe that to be a good teacher, one has to tailor instruction to the needs of each individual child. I am patient and easy going in my teaching style. I believe that structure is important to ensure that core skills are developed, but hope to help children learn in a way that is also fun, so they will look forward to each lesson. Reading is an essential skill that children will need throughout their lives, and every child can learn to read given the right instruction.
