When I was learning how to draw, I started out copying drawings of characters that I saw in books and TV and used what I saw to draw my own characters soon after. That was "fine" but I realized over time that it was not enough to simply "see" something drawn a type of way, but that I needed to understand "why" it was drawn that way. I feel as though the best way to teach a student is to first tackle the subject that they enjoy drawing the most, in this case character design, so that they'll be more interested in the lesson. Then break down what makes the figure look that way and how it's done so that they will have the skill and experience to pull original ideas, poses, and designs from their own memory.
