Live to Learn - Learn to Live!

Taught ESL for more than twenty-five years across Canada and internationally. Lived and taught in Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Costa Rica and United States. I was a teacher-trainer for Oxford Seminars, where I taught teacher-candidates how to teach ESL for international classrooms. I was responsible for instructing and then certifying teacher-candidates. I am a life-long artist, graduated from Laguna Beach High School, which was at the time a fine-art and performance school. I have more than ten years of community college Fine Arts experience and my minor in University was Fine Arts.
Dynamic, personable, enthusiastic and creative. I love using music, art, humor and even some acting in my teaching style, and I enjoy crafting fun and exciting lesson plans that engage my students in real-life scenarios where their new language skills may best benefit them.

A Little Bit About Me...

Once taught a 7 year-old Korean boy Chinese when I was a sophomore---I found being a personal tutor is challenging and interesting, because you should adjust your teaching method cater to the student based on your observation on him/her as well as the communication through all the process. I had provided legal aids as a tutor of a relevant junior middle school--- It makes me more open and confident to give a presentation in the front of more people.

As an artist, I recognize the importance of developing my own aesthetic language. As an educator, I am committed to clearly communicating and imparting these values. Both practices have continually motivated me to expand my knowledge of art techniques and processes as well as the dialogue of contemporary art. A good teacher must expose students to art history, engage them in contemporary art, and allow them to make meaningful connections to their own lives and art practices. Teaching constantly requires me to digest and reference outside influences and disciplines to support student’s diverse needs. Encouraging students to learn from each other and collaborate is an important part of my teaching method. Through this process, students are exposed to diverse perspectives constantly. This also creates an environment that is receptive to formal and informal critique. An investigation ... read more

I believe the biggest key to learning is finding a way for students to relate to the information. Getting to know the student and relating thier interests to the material at hand is key to making a connection. I also believe it is critical to remain positive and supportive with students. At some point every student becomes frustrated by material that is challenging to them. By being able to keep students in a positive state of mind and by keeping the material fresh and fun, students will be more willing and able to continue the learning process.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Bachelor's degree in History and an Associate's in Process Technology. I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. I possess excellent math skills and took statistics in college. I enjoy helping others and feel I am a good fit for this position.
I do not have a specific teaching style. Everyone is different, so one particular type of teaching style may not be as effective as another. In order to be effective, I think it is important to recognize the students strengths and weaknesses before embarking on a certain learning path.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love educating and much rather provide a fun and hands-on approach when teaching my students. I do not believe in the word can’t. That word takes me to a level where I am determined to help the students understand that all things are possible. I believe in hard work, persistency, and participation. I understand that each student learns on a different level and I am prepared to make a curriculum based on each student’s needs. I use quizzes and tests to measure each student’s growth of the subject matter. I know that all students are capable of learning; it is my goal to make sure they accomplish that.

A Little Bit About Me...

Speaking to children of all ages comes naturally to me. My parents both love being teachers and have been in the game for over 30 years a piece! I traveled to schools to give presentations on my marine mammal experiences to grades K-8. I currently work for the Education Department at the Saint Louis ZOO where we strive to keep learning a blast! I believe learning sticks when it's fun and stumbled upon! A GOOD teacher can be a gift and set a fire in a child or young adult to take on the world! I love sharing my passion for learning and understanding. I hope it's contagious!
I have always had a knack for the sciences and left the Midwest to follow my love of Marine Biology. While in school, I revisted my interest in the arts (painting, piano, and animation). It was then I realized I was passionate about so many topics and didn't want to limit myself to one thing! I've work ... read more

More About This Tutor...

During my junior and senior year in college, I TA’ed a finance class called options pricing for two semesters. Options pricing was a difficult subject. I worked very hard to receive an A- for the course, which turned out to be my favor. I had insight to the intellectual hurdles other students had to overcome to master the material. So, teaching them came very naturally. In addition, I abandoned the lecture format for a very interactive teaching format. This allowed the students to ask many questions and allowed me to gage the level of comprehension from in the students real-time.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that one of the most important aspects of a successful teaching relationship is understanding both the student's personal learning style and what motivates him or her. I care deeply about the success of the students I work with and am able to adapt my teaching techniques to meet each student's personal needs. I strive to not only give my students greater knowledge, but greater confidence as well. I do that with the hope that our sessions not only help them to develop in our areas of interest, but also help them to become more successful students overall.
