While completing my teaching degree I taught for three years with troubled youth. Subjects were regents level and the subject was earth science and algebra or course I as it is called in NY. I have also taught Summer school at the Allen Center in South Kortright which can be a tough crowd to work with. During my undergraduate studies I tutored chemistry and biology. I also taught 8th grade physical science in Prince George Virgina.
In science and math the learner has to practice much like learning to play a musical instrument. It helps if you can bring real world applications into the classroom so it is meaningful to the students otherwise they feel like they are learning something just for the cause of learning.

After graduating from high school as valedictorian, I earned a Zoology BS and a Studio Art BA from SUNY Oswego, successfully completing English composition, speech, visual arts, biology, zoology, chemistry, Spanish, and calculus II courses, and graduated with a 3.76 GPA. Prior, I had taken and earned over a 90% in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and AP calculus. I enjoy helping students of all ages learn. Education lays the groundwork for every goal that one aspires to in life. I love the English language and words. I feel that it is important for every student to come away with at least a basic understanding of how to write and speak. It will only help later in life. I love science because I have always asked 'how things work'. I am patient and enthusiastic. My energy and love of knowledge is contagious. I do not have a specific way of teaching, I adapt methods based on how the students learn best. I see potential in everyone. I have yet to meet a person that excelled at nothing. I want to make an imprint on my students that they will carry with them their entire lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Siena College graduate I developed a very hands on approach to active learning. Through classroom lecture and instruction I've completed the necessary coursework to complete my BS of biology. Due to my strong work ethic I've gained knowledge and skills in the physical sciences, as well as in other subject areas. During my college years I subbed as teacher at a public K-12 school. During that time I taught a variety of grade levels, and worked as a one-on-one aide.
I believe that in order to succeed in teaching and being an educator you must inspire those that you are teaching. A child who is excited to learn, will do much better. I feel a hands on approach is best, guiding the child to personal success.

My teaching experience to date has been in a professional setting. I relate best to high school and college students because these levels are what I am used to dealing with. I am relatively patient and willing to re-explain difficult concepts. I provide working examples of concepts to foster comprehension and retention.
I pursued my degree in Biotechnology with the intent of continuing my education with a PhD in Molecular Microbiology. Instead, I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a total of 5 years as an Analytical Chemist. I was a Trained Trainer at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for 2 years which means I completed a program on how to teach other employees to perform tasks in a method that maximized retention (allowed them to remember the process well). I have solid grammatical skills honed while writing professional reports.

A Little Bit About Me...

I received my Bachelor's degree in 1989 and worked as an assistant engineer in Binghamton NY until I started my masters program at SUNY Cortland. I have held Physics, Earth science, Chemistry and Biology appointments in the years that followed in a variety of School districts throughout the state. I have spent five years tutoring and 17 teaching, including 12 years of summer school. The best thing about teaching and tutoring science is that it easily transfers to all of the other disciplines. My experiences and my insatiable appetite for learning have enabled me to make significant connections across the disciplines and to keep on learning!

A Little Bit About Me...

I teach the way I counsel--by expecting self-responsibility. I use humor to enhance one's motivation to seek out and focus on one's strengths. I am not a coddler--I believe that higher expectations result in higher performance. When coupled with empathy, faith in the individual and strong foundations of skills, success is inevitable.
I have been supervising other counselors since 1997 in their report-writing. I take pride in my writing skills in the face of a field riddled with nurses who prefer abbreviations to beautifully executed coherent sentences. The sheer eloquence of being able to deliver a report allowing the reader to infer the true meaning of your words, while not providing any statements that will give fuel to a legal representative is a time-earned skill. In addition to my writing skills, I have 14 years of business skills, extensive analytical skills, which t ... read more
