During my undergraduate career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I obtained a wealth of knowledge in the fields of math and science. I did this by striving for excellence in the classroom and participating in cutting edge research with professors in the Entomology and Organic Chemistry departments. My extensive knowledge of the subjects I’ve studied has allowed me to assist my friends in understanding complex and difficult problems. This past year I privately tutored classmates in both Statistics and Organic Chemistry.
I believe the best way for someone to learn something is through application and repetition. As both a tutor and youth lacrosse coach I have had success by teaching my students how to approach problems rather than simply giving them answers. Working with middle school students is an adventure. The students all have different ways of learning, so blackboard work is a great way for them to visualize, and I also use 3 dimensional models when they are appropriate. My experience showed me that the students that wanted to learn would stay after school to get more individualized attention, which I was always available to give them. That moment when they understood the math concept I was teaching was the best part.
I am very good at math, so in college I got into the tutoring program for inner city elementary students and the student I tutored showed remarkable improvement in her math grades as a result. Many years later I was accepted into the Alternate Route to Certification II program and received my Math 7-12 teaching certificate in May 2003.

I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. In less then 1/2 hour, I was able to help him go from failing grades to straight A's. Later, I tutored fellow students in Pre-Calculus while taking the course myself. I ended up with a 4.0 GPA in that class. I am easy going, energetic, very passionate (especially when teaching calculus and physics), and engaging. In most cases it takes only a few sessions and students are having fun. I believe that most students can understand mathematics with a proper explanation. For example, the order of operations is usually presented to students without explanation for its existence. This gives the false sense that it is an arbitrary rule. I enjoy sharing my understanding to students, but I also enjoy providing a role model for my students. If I show compassion to a students it is almost always reciprocated. Academic excellence is a virtue but so is being a kind and caring person. I like to spread this through my teaching style.
