My interest in academia is rooted in my desire to help children learn and to make that learning lifelong. It is my goal to make learning fun, purposeful, and memorable. I have a BS in Chemistry, an MFS in Forensic Chemistry and a strong aptitude in math and computers. Early on in my career I spent 1 1/2 years as a substitute teacher in the areas of math and science, including several months as a long-term substitute in chemistry. For the last 20+ years I have been employed as a chemist/scientist/supervisor in both government and corporate settings. As a scientist I routinely mentored the chemists who worked with me and as a supervisor I was responsible for the training of new hires. I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!"
