In my classroom one might observe the same material presented in various ways by means of lectures, DVD documentaries, readings, discussions, and Power Point presentations in order to accommodate the students’ different methods of knowledge acquisition. My approach to teaching is to first make a general assessment of the student's skill level and having the student play what he or she is comfortable with on their instrument. I try to make sure that a student is getting comfortable with the music they are learning before leaving the lesson by breaking down the subject matter and going over it a few times. I also encourage students to bring in music that they like to listen to and would like to learn how to play to keep them motivated. I don't believe that there is one way to teach everyone and so my approach from one student to the next may vary. Overall, I try to keep lessons personal because after all, learning music is for the student's enjoyment.
