A Little Bit About Me...

I worked at Moorpark College as an ESL and Writing Tutor, helping students discover ways to identify and clarify ideas, refine a topic, outline ideas, and develop the skills needed to work independently. I have my BA from Scripps College in both English and History. I have significant experience tutoring within the humanities, but also German, math and the sciences. I started college as a Biology major, so I have a firm grounding in mathematics and the sciences, which I have bolstered to prepare for graduate school in Architecture. I was a Jumpstart (AmeriCorps) team leader, which involved implementing early childhood curriculum and promoting skill building for at-risk preschool children.

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in 1984. My subjects of passion were math and science and I enjoy working with children who struggle in those areas. I have home schooled my son through the end of 12th grade and he was ready for college freshman classes at age 15. Starting in his second grade year, we were joined by a student who has learning disabilities. He also thrived in the tutorial teaching environment. My desire is to work with children who really desire to learn but need that extra time and encouragement to succeed.
I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. The kinesthetic/tactile learner had learning disabilities akin to ADD, but still did very well in the small group environment. One of my key strengths as a science and math teacher is that after receiving BS & MS chemistry degrees, I’ve spent over 20 years as an industrial scientist (Allied Signal Aerospace, Eastman Kodak, & Ford). A common thread throughout this time has been to recognize the value of a good work ethic, character, and thriving on being a problem solver. After becoming a teacher (4 years ago), I’ve developed a passion for motivating “at-risk” and advanced students to learn through adept usage of differentiation, rigorous content, and experiential teaching techniques.
