A Little Bit About Me...

I finished my lower division coursework at a california community college (AHC) and earned a total of six associate degrees. While at the community college, I administered practice test for students in MESA in mathematics (Calculus 1,2,3, and 4) while also working the maximum of 20 hours a week in the campus math lab (walk-in tutoring). Furthermore, I attended and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and finished the necessary coursework to apply to all medical school programs in to the country. I tutored for side money while attending UCLA. Currently, I'm a graduate student at SDSU. I'm two courses and a Master's thesis away from receiving my Master's degree in Physics.

A Little Bit About Me...

My 5 years as a United States Marine established important core values such as tact, integrity, discipline, and commitment. I bring these values with me into the classroom. I believe that the success of a student depends more on their level of commitment than on inherent talent. However, learning must be an enjoyable experience in order for a strong commitment to be made. I am passionate about mathematics and the sciences, and this passion shows in my teaching style. Students recognize this passion, and it makes the learning experience fun. I am patient, open-minded, and innovative; so if a student is struggling with a particular topic, I find an alternative teaching approach which better suits their learning style. The success of my students is gratifying, to both student and teacher alike.

I am a dynamic, energetic instructor with high standards. My enthusiasm for teaching is obvious in the time and energy I spend to help my students succeed. I want my students to be able to use higher levels of critical thinking skills and become effective problem solvers, not just robots who can memorize facts. Having worked with students of all ages and levels, I find that there are rarely children I can't reach, regardless of disabilities, abilities, or motivation. As a tutor, I have the joy of watching my students make progress in their class material as well as seeing their confidence rise. My goal is to make a strong positive impact on the lives of those I teach, and I work hard to achieve that goal.

At The English Center, the focus is on creating a positive learning environment in a supportive setting. After establishing the agenda, a tutoring session ensues in which particular emphasis is placed on hands-on involvement, attention to detail, developing critical thinking skills and fostering self-empowerment. My style draws upon a variety of influences, including patience, enthusiasm and a healthy dose of humor. An unwritten goal of each session is to ensure that the student leaves with a greater understanding of the subject matter than when he arrived.

As a Master’s degree recipient in English, I have developed a comprehensive background in literature and composition. Moreover, my professional history includes many years of teaching and mentoring in both in the United States and abroad, which has enhanced my ability to communicate complex subject matter to a culturally varied student demographic. In Taipei, Taiwan, I prepared, facilitated and assessed English classes for local elementary, secondary, and adult Taiwanese students. While receiving my NCLB certified CLAD credential from SDSU, I served an inner-city population of students as a student teacher at San Diego High School, during which I had implemented and practiced effective teaching strategies to accommodate students with special needs and English Language Learners. A Little Bit About Me...

I am very student-centered. I believe that all students can learn any subject if the teaching style is adapted to the student's learning needs and prior experience. I further believe that learning should be fun for the student and to this end I constantly seek out interesting resources for students. I am patient and expect high achievement from students, but I also believe that high achievement only occurs when education is tailored to the student. I am currently a Master's student in Educational Psychology and I incorporate empirical research data into my method of teaching; I believe in doing what is proven to work to help students achieve!

I am warm-hearted and intuitive. I will listen carefully to what you say about your tutoring needs before I look at the work you are doing and offer my analysis of how you can make your language stronger, clearer and more persuasive. I have raised two children who have financed their college educations through scholarships. What I learned from them is that learning is best when YOU do it. I can guide your steps and give you feedback, but everything in between will come from you, and that is exciting! We will be a winning team, you and I!

I love to teach and my students tell me that it shows. I like to evaluate the student to see where they have strengths and weaknesses and how they best respond to instruction. I take skills and break them down to small pieces, to give the student a feeling of success and mastery which can propel them to strive and succeed. I value a lot of positive reinforcement and do my best to provide a positive, active and stimulating learning environment. I have come to realize what a fragile thing teaching is and how important it is to create an environment of success, and a "yes, I can" feeling to encourage the student to keep going in their efforts.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe every student deserves to learn and succeed. I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. In recognizing that each student is an individual with innate talents and their own learning style, a teacher needs to customize teaching techniques to accommodate for that. I am committed to instill in each student the desire to learn and accept challenges so that they will be prepared for a future beyond school walls.
