As a teacher in Ukraine, I was not there to replace the normal history and literature teachers. Instead, I supplemented their lessons and focused on developing critical thinking skills and stressed one on one interactions with the students. With history, the real teaching comes not in the memorization of facts, but in gaining an understanding of context, critical thinking, and the ability to approach the subject with a degree of relativity. I believe that the best learning comes from creating an atmosphere of friendliness and mutual respect between student and tutor. I was able to establish this relationship with my students in Ukraine.
