A Little Bit About Me...

I went to a Magnet Middle School which taught me accerlated Math and Science. I then went on to take all Honors courses, and some Advanced Placement courses, in High school. I graduated with Honors with an Advanced Diploma. I am now a third year student at Old Dominion University where I am studying Elementary Education. I have been tutoring for about 5 years ranging in ages from elementary school to adults who are trying to further their education. I try my hardest to break things down to the simpliest form to better help students understand. If I have tried absolutely everything and the concept is still not grasped, I will find someone who is more knowledgeable than me and seek their guidance. ... read more

Recognizing that each person has his/her own learning style, I emphasize "application" of material learned. I do this primarily by providing examples of information taught and require my students to do the same. My approach to teaching is to create a friendly environment with positive expectations to enhance the learning experience.
Having been devoted to the welfare of children and families and valuing education highly throughout my life, I find tutoring a satisfying occupation. After vounteering my services for many years, I attained formal degrees in education, psychology, and counseling, with very high GPAs. Teaching is not a job for me, it is what defines me. I have been teaching for over 13 years and still desire to do nothing else. I love my job and find great joy in making a difference in the lives of my students. I have high expectations and believe students can reach their potential given the right support. I believe I also have the skills to teach those students who struggle most. I seem to have the knack for breaking it down for them so they can understand.
I presently teach at a K-12 private school for students with learning differences. I have taught students in all grades, K-12. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.
As a NOAA Corps Officer, I helped teach new personnel many facets of our day-to-day operations, from instructing new officers on getting their Officer of the Deck qualifications to preparing new survey techs for their h ... read more

I believe in teaching with love, enthusiasm, compassion, understanding, excitement, and discipline. You must keep an open mind, open heart, and open arms to be truly successful. I employ a variety of educational styles in an attempt to engage all types of learners, with a heavy emphacis on hands-on activites. I am not afraid to try new whings, nor am I afraid to try again if something doesn't work out as well as planned. I try also to treat each student as an individual while still adhering to basic group rules of conduct and respect.

I love working one on one with students. I enjoy relating science to real day events and showing students how to think out of the box. I teach using neumonics, songs and repetition. I believe that science is one of the most important subjects because it teaches you how the world around you works. Most people believe that teachers chose the wrong profession and I think that society chose the wrong heros.
I graduated from Hampton University with a BS in Molecular Biology and my love for science pushed me to pursue a MS in Medical Science. I have tutored at Hampton University in the areas of Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Science, and General Biology. I enjoy teaching and explaining many things to individuals and small groups, of all ages, although my tutoring experience is somewhat limited. I can communicate in different styles with different people, based on how I see they can learn most effectively. Seeing the "Aha!" expression when a student has grasped a topic, especially when he or she has been frustrated, is one of my greatest rewards. Especially in math, I believe that many people find it difficult because somebody told them that math was difficult (and they believed that), or because they missed one step along the way, and everything thereafter was impenetrable.
I have earned a BS in Computer Science, with a very strong math minor. It would have been a double major, but third-year theoretical math stopped being fun (and computers were still fun). However, math up to and including first year calculus was both straightfor ... read more

I believe that anyone can learn any subject if you give them the proper tools. Setting goals and meeting them is only part of the battle, Knowing what when wrong and how to fix it is the other half. Living with an LD gives me an appreciation of the time it can take to learn; and that not everyone can learn in the same way. I prefer a hands-on and organized teaching style where I can make connections to real world examples. However, I do know that each child is an individual and learns differently.
I am a graduate from Randolph College formally known as Randolph Macon Woman's College. Currently I am working on obtaining an additional degree in Chemistry. I have taken classes in advanced mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. As a person labeled LD I understand and have developed techniques to learn material. These experiences helped me tutor others in math and science.
