I recently returned to the US after living in France for 5 years, speaking almost exclusively French. I am fluent, and can speak both properly and colloquially, with a very good regional accent. I also speak good Spanish, Tibetan, and small amounts of several other languages, making me very experienced in learning languages which helps me know common problems people have. I strongly believe that an education that leads with concepts instead of rote is the surest route to lifelong success. This is certainly the method that worked for me, and I find that, without the conceptual grounding, a student will not get as much out of necessary practice exercises. Thus, when I am working with a student on a subject, I tend to approach the concept foremost, creatively using a wide range of examples and descriptions to elucidate it.
