A Little Bit About Me...

I was a substitute teacher from my first year of college (99) to about 2005. I did all subject and all grades. I also worked at an out of school suspension program so the students still were learning and getting their work done. I also worked at the center of disability services helping and working with the disabled students in everyday school activities.
I like working in small groups and 1-on-1 is even better. I like to get to know them, become a friend/buddy with the student so they feel comfortable with me. In the past, with good and trouble students, this has worked and it seems like they don't want to let me down and that they do trust me and start trusting what I am telling them and enjoying it. I also like to show different little tricks to help to learn things and better understand things when fitting.

A Little Bit About Me...

I take more of an inquiring approach and I become more of the facilitator and guide and direct my students by asking questions, exploring options, suggesting alternatives, and encouraging them to develop criteria to make informed choices. My Overall goal is to develop in students the capacity for independent action, initiative, and responsibility. I work with my students on projects in a consultative fashion and I try to provide as much support and encouragement as possible. I feel the advantage to this teaching style is the personal flexibility, the focus on student's needs and goals, and the willingness to explore options and alternative courses of action.

As an individual with experience and an educational background in child and adolescent clinical psychology, I believe I have a unique perspective in working with this population. I enjoy working with youth of all developmental levels. I have frequently received feedback that I am a patient, compassionate, mild mannered, and highly motivated individual. Having worked within a multiple intelligence framework, I believe that each child has his or her own unique strengths and learning style. Therefore, it is important to identify and apply such strengths and learning styles to advance a child’s progress. My goal across contexts is to make a positive impact in children's lives, as I believe a sole individual possesses such power.
Currently as a doctorate student I have earned two degrees, a B.A. in psychology and an M.A. in clinical psychology. Also, I am currently working on doctorate ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a guest lecturer several times at RPI. Due to work and family commitments I did not complete the degree. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. Physics is my forte and I love talking about and teaching the subject. I am especially helpfull to students challenged by word problems. Throughout college I would host study groups in Physics and Chemistry. I currently am a financial advisor.

For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.
Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. Last year, as President of the Writers Forum, we spent several months tutoring as part of an after school program where we helped children in Baltimore write.

I have been working with children for 10 years. All children have the ability to learn new things when given the chance. I feel children learn best when instruction is varied. Some students are visual learners, some are hands-on, and others may just need one-on-one instruction. I feel assessing student's progress is also important to see where the instruction needs to go next. Through my literacy practicum I have learned how to vary my instruction for each individual child. I am a very patient, flexible, and considerate person. With my knowledge and experience I feel that I can help children become the best students possible.

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. But I like to show that indeed, they use it all the time and that it can be fun. Learning should not only be effective, but enjoyable as well.
At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued ... read more

My belief is that identifying students' learning style is key to their success. I use a variety of strategies and activities to meet students' needs. Besides having a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, I have a strong analytical/technical background that enabled me to succeed in physics, civil engineering, and electrical engineering electives that I took as part of my undergraduate studies. During a ten-year period during my professional career in the telecom industry, I trained managers and technicians in a number of subjects. I also developed training curriculums and prepared training materials for my classes. The subjects involved classroom training in use of a Verizon inventory management system, quality assurance seminars, and informal mentoring workshops for new managers on improving their leadership, interpersonal, communications, and conflict resolution skills.

My goal with every child is to provide an educational experience tailored to her or him, specifically. I have mastered diagnostic techniques that will determine a child's needs in terms of learning-style, ability-level, and comfort-zone. In my experience, a constructivist approach, where the student is motivated to take control of her or his learning works best in that it provides children with the tools and confidence to remember and use the material. Children have a positive learning experience when they are provided a safe learning environment, tools with which to work, and space to fit new information into their schema of stored knowledge.
As an educator, I have had the pleasure of working with urban, rural, foreign, and special-needs students. After gaining experience and education in three major regions of this country, I feel well-prepared to teach and tutor students of all ... read more
