A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

I have taught mathematics, statistics and technical math for 15 years. Primarily my audience has been working adults seeking to take a certification examination. In my training as a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt and Quality Engineer, I use many mathematical models, including algebra, geometry, statistics, and engineering modeling.
My teaching style is not memorization but rather practice. The best method that I found for teaching math based subjects is step by step work throughs for each problem. By taking the time to step through each math problem, the student learns the theory (Algebra, geometry, etc) as well as the solution. Just solving the problem doesn't teach them as much as understanding HOW to get the solution

I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. I taught for one semester at Central Bucks School District where I taught Academic Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. I then taught two years at Gateway School District where I taught 8th grade physical science. I now have a permanent position at Yough School District where I teach 7th grade Life Science. The purpose of my teaching is to allow every student to succeed. I will try any way possible to reach this goal for every child. After receiving a BS in Business Administration from a liberal arts college, I worked for several years in the business world. The majority of my work experience has been in the banking and finance industry. It was through these experiences that I realized my true passion for learning could be shared through training and teaching. The past two years I have been studying to earn my teaching certification. During my course work I have had the opportunity and pleasure to observe, tutor and instruct in several classrooms in the area. Also, I spent two years coaching and motivating a high school volleyball team.

A Little Bit About Me...

This particular position interests me because I struggled with math through middle school and understand the frustration it can create for a student. Mathematics is now my strongest subject and I chose the profession of accounting to utilize those strengths. During my time at college, I helped other students with their studies in math and business, specifically statistics and quantitative analysis. Although this teaching experience was with college level students, I have held a summer job working with 8-12 year olds for the past four years. When I finish my Master’s Degree, I may consider teaching at an institution such as CCAC because I enjoy helping others with their education.
As a result of my post-high school studies in mathematics and business, I feel I'm suited to tutor people in those subjects. Statistics, quantitative methods, and analytical methods are my strongest s ... read more

I enjoy teaching children at all levels. I find that children learn at different speeds and by different means. So, to be truly effective you have to present the information to the broadest base of students and hope you address all their needs. Having a great level of flexibility in your lesson plans is need to ensure that no one student falls behind.
Over the past year, I served as an Americorps volunteer in an inner city charter school with an emphasis on character education. I worked one on one with students helping them with math, reading, and science skills. I assisted in classroom teaching of mini lessons too. I also helped with their after-school program, I also created supplemental study guides and multimedia software to help students to improve their study skills. Tutoring has been rewarding, because it has increased my interest in the field of education. Subsequently, ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a high school German exchange student and subsequent German major, I have more than textbook knowledge of the German language. My fluency comes from real-world interactions as well as attending a German high school. I taught courses at the University of Richmond for students of German wishing to practice their language skills, yet whose competency may not have been to the standard for a traditional literature class. Furthermore, I received an International Baccalaureate Diploma with high marks for my high school subjects (concentrations in Music History and Theory, German Language, English Literature, and European History). The IB program is more rigorous than many college programs, and with this experience, I feel that I would be qualified to tutor any student in high school courses.

I have enjoyed tutoring math students who are advanced learners and students who are beginning their study of college-level math. No matter their capability, each student's success is very important to me. I have often met with students outside of tutoring sessions to explain a problem, and had e-mail conversations with several students to ensure they're understanding material. In tutoring sessions, I like making sure each student is actively participating in solving the problem, as opposed to simply giving them the right answer. I also think I'm able to simplify problems so that students aren't just "going through the motions" and are actually understanding how to solve a problem.
From high school to graduate school I have enjoyed being a scholar of many disciplines. In the last year, I took it upon myself to take what I know and teach it to young enthusiastic scholars, and i ... read more

Hands on, Practice based, through step by step instruction. Visual learning whenever applicable. Geometry, algebra, physics, and some calculus are in my range of teaching. I believe that every child has the unalienable right to experience some success each and every day of their lives. My approach is hands-on, student centered and nurturing. I believe in learning by discovery and the use of manipulatives in a manner whereby the student learns without even knowing it. The discovery approach is best to grasping knowledge but to process any and all information is tantamount. Knowing what to do with the information is far more important than just possessing it. Therefore, my students need to learn how to utilize their knowledge by applying it a variety of situations for true understanding.

My experience as a Young Life Leader has given me the joy of mentoring high school students for 5 years. I have taught students ranging from different levels of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences as well as varying socioeconomic status. I welcome the challenge of meeting the educational needs of individual students. I prefer the discovery method in my teaching style because it gives students a foundation and allows them to build upon it. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching art is one of my favorite ways to apply my abilities. I am particularly passionate about comics and giving children the tools to express themselves through art and self-publishing, skills I hope they apply on their own after I am finished teaching them. I believe in giving children the same respect as adults whenever possible. In my experience, developing an authentic rapport with children is more effective than talking down to them.
I have volunteered teaching grade-school age children in theater at Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley, PA and teaching creative writing to fifth-grade students at the William H. Ray School in Chicago, IL. I have had paid positions teaching a workshop in comics to middle-school students at Sewickley Academy and teaching drawing and basic self-publishing at an after-school program in West Lebanon, NH.
