CERTIFIED ENGLISH TEACHER

Student teaching at Rocky Mountain High School, in Meridian, Idaho. Taught English to sophomores and seniors. I have taught as an observer in middle schools and junior high schools; South in Boise, Idaho, Rober Stuart Junior High in Twin Falls, Idaho, and at Pathways Middle School in Meridian, Idaho. I tutored at South Junior High in the Avid program and in a ESL tutoring room in the same school.
I differentiate my teaching to try and match the current abilities and learning styles of the students. I want to know what the student knows, and then begin to teach them something new. I will demonstrate, guide the student through a few examples and let them do it on their own.

Don't tell me 2+2=4. Tell me WHY 2+2=4.

Although I wish I could count the endless amount of time I spent playing teacher as a child, I know parents are looking for more expierence than an eight year old and her dolls. I have tutored children, ages ranging from eight to fourteen, off and on for three years. I have expierence and am personally more comfortable helping with English and math centered tutoring for any grade level but am able to help with other elementary level classes.I've had the privilege to help with the passionate and the difficult and have been able to produce satisfactory results for all parties involved.
My teaching style differs with each child. One child does well learning by applying the material to real live situations Another does better with breaking it down and just memorizing facts I am very flexible and make an effort to find the best method to save both myself and the child time that would ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As an educator, my philosophy in education is to inspire and to guide students. I am very driven in the education field and it is of great importance to me. I have earned my Associates of Arts degree, and felt it was necessary to continue on with obtaining a Bachelors degree in order to expand my career options.I furthered my education by adding on my Secondary Teaching Certification, as well as student teaching experience and employment within the Caldwell School District to add to my teaching resume.
I am a very patient and driven teacher, which I believe are extremely important characteristics. Easy going is a great way to describe my personality, and students seem to sense that from me. It makes for a comfortable learning environment, but I also love having a lot of structure and planning in my methods so that learning stays on track. The educators that I have admired and looke ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

When I was a high school student, I tutored pre-algebra, geometry and algebra, Shakespeare, World Literature, and Earth Science. I managed my own clients and improved test scores with every client. During the summer of 2005, I tutored mentally disabled children in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I attended the University of Idaho and have received a B.S. in Mathematics. While there, I worked at the Polya Math Lab, tutoring college algebra. I continued to tutor on my own during college, and have tutored in all forms of vector calculus, from methods of integration to 3d modeling. I have also tutored Abstract Algebra (group and ring theory), Combinatorics, and Number Theory. I am particularly good at walking people through proofs. While at college, I have also helped people develop their writing skills by participating in over 4 semester-long workshops.

None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Except for my earliest years of employment (where I was often employed full-time in radio or newspaper), I often tutored along the way. I have been able to tutor part-time a good many years since I often come across young people (and adults) who ... read more

After 10 years in the magazine and event business, I moved into teaching technology at a small, local high school. In addition to teaching, I earned my credential and masters in education during the first three years. My background in editing and love of computers has proven very valuable. Although students are using computers, they need review and practice in English grammar, writing strategies and punctuation as an essential part of each lesson. My expertise in journalism, editing and interviewing has come in very handy. In addition, I am often called to teach not only students, but provide staff training and informal one-on-one tutoring. I am versed in several software programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Freehand, FrontPage, as well as some database development applications.

I enjoy helping others learn and master their educational skills by sitting down with them and taking them step by step through the process with which they need to apply to their task at hand. I am a patient person who makes the learning process fun for those who are seeking help. I believe that if a person takes the time to show another how to apply the basic rules of application to the problem or task at hand that that person will have a better understanding of what they are doing and find that through this process the task will become easier for them to obtain. I feel that all people can achieve a high level of academic achievement when they are given the tools and understanding of what they are doing.

Due to my background, I have learned patience and passion are essential for a student’s success. Further, not everyone learns the same way. Therefore, over the last five years, I have discovered multiple ways to explain something differently to help develop understanding. Further, I feel that your student needs to understand the material, not just regurgitate information for a test. This way, your student can draw upon this knowledge for future classes and tests.
For the last five years, I have been helping children and adolescents with disabilities and, more recently, tutoring students at BSU. After five and a half years at BSU, I graduated with an elementary education degree. I have a background in mathematics and science, as both were previous majors I chose to pursue. I have a unique approach to teaching because my background is both analytical (numbers and science) and imaginative (theater and literature). While classroom training is my forte, I also have a solid background in teaching online. This combination is particularly useful since no two children learn in the same way. I do not believe any student is dumb. If he or she has struggled picking up a concept, it is more likely because the right method of teaching has not yet been explored. I also believe educational advancement needs to be determined objectively by comparing scores from start to finish and subjectively by measuring a student's own feelings about his or her progress.

I have always been passionate about art. I am fortunate to have learned my skill from some very talented and capable professors who I admire; I know I have the ability to successfully teach students at all ages and knowledge levels. I have spent much time volunteering at a local elementary school, not only teaching art, but helping out with other duties as well. I enjoy teaching and helping others in any way that I can. I completed my student teaching in Fall 2009 where I taught grades 7-9 Art Foundations and Drawing. I immensely enjoyed student teaching and was sad to leave. I look forward to having regular students again teaching in a field I am truly passionate about. I have been substitute teaching for the past 2 years in all subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the past year I have tutored through The College of Idaho's Chemistry Club. Chemistry, especially the math portions, never came easily to me. I had to work hard and spend hours asking professors questions, but now I am much better at chemistry because of it. As a tutor I wanted to help fellow students who were struggling as I had.
Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show ... read more

Teaching has been a wonderful experience for me. I have found the student have taught me as much as I have taught them. It is a rewarding profession because the results of seeing a student finally understand what you have been trying to teach him or her is a great feeling. Through the years, I have had many unusual experiences due to the many areas of the country in which I have lived and the many different types of students I have had the privilege of teaching and developing a better understanding of the subject matter with which I have been working to help them develop the skills they need to succeed.

More About This Tutor...

I was formerly a high school English Teacher and an ESL teacher. I taught one year overseas teaching English as a second language. For two years, I was an education supervisor at the Hawaii Job Corps, and it was my job to ensure that the students' academic needs were being met. I excelled at that job, but had to leave as I moved back to the mainland. I worked as both a tutor and a teacher for many years (10) and loved my career. However, for the past 13 years, I have been working as a Financial Advisor. I am conscientious, hard-working, responsible, and I am very comfortable meeting people. I am considering returning to my teaching career.
I like working with children and young people very much. I believe that teaching should always be student-centered. It is my goal to find what helps a person to learn and really work with that student's natural talent and personality. I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer in the Socratic style of teaching which, as you know, helps students themselves to think through issues and problems and discover the answer as we move along. I have always enjoyed leading students to that 'eureka' moment where they have grasped a difficult idea or concept, put it in their own words, and communicated it back to me, the teacher. I do believe that most children are capable of this kind of learning, at an appropriate level with their development, and do remember the information better than if they have learned something by rote, but not really understood it.
