My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

In my past I have taught many years as a tennis instructor and ski instructor. I also taught at a Federal correctional Institution in Englewood, Colorado in their Education Department in 1990 and 1991. i tutored inmates for their 8th grade equivalency as well as several others through their GED's. In 2002 through 2004 I also was the training officer for Star West Aviation. My teaching style was, and always has been to use humor and patience to bring my students along and to achieve where they had failed in the past. I found, especially in the prison system, that people achieve best when you make the work interesting and also within the student's ability. My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. Specifically I have experiences with students who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backrounds and also with students with special needs and learning disabilties. In the last few years I have tutored students one-on-one in organizational skills, studying for tests, writing and editing.
I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. The best way to do this is begin with activities that are fun and if it's possible, to access the creative side of the brain during learning to help students to relax.
