As a Siena College graduate I developed a very hands on approach to active learning. Through classroom lecture and instruction I've completed the necessary coursework to complete my BS of biology. Due to my strong work ethic I've gained knowledge and skills in the physical sciences, as well as in other subject areas. During my college years I subbed as teacher at a public K-12 school. During that time I taught a variety of grade levels, and worked as a one-on-one aide.
I believe that in order to succeed in teaching and being an educator you must inspire those that you are teaching. A child who is excited to learn, will do much better. I feel a hands on approach is best, guiding the child to personal success.

Attaining two degrees has opened my eyes to many different teaching styles and ways of learning. I believe that the most effective way to learn and teach is to explain concepts and theories thoroughly before any application of these concepts. I believe that in order to really learn a subject, and not just memorize it, the theory must be understood. I have tutored high school students and fellow college students in the past, and working as a team to explore the concepts behind the applications has proved to be successful for students' understanding of subject matter and, in the process, furthering my own.
I attained my first degree in Supply Chain Management from Syracuse University in 2003. After working in that field for a few years, however, I chose to change my career path. I then went back to school at the City College of New York to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. ... read more

I hold both a B.S. and a Ph.D. in chemistry and over the past 14 years I have mentored, tutored, and instructed at the college level in chemistry and biology. I currently am employed as an assistant professor of chemistry at a small private liberal arts college where I have taught chemistry full-time the past two years. My area of study is biochemistry, a rewarding interdisciplinary field, which has trained me extensively in many facets of chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Scientists and teaching professors must also be effective communicators, both in written and verbal modes, and I have had extensive training and experience writing and publishing scientific papers and presenting my scientific research at the national level.
My collective experiences as a student, mentor, and instructor in large and small collegiate environments have taught me to display my passion for scie ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In science and math the learner has to practice much like learning to play a musical instrument. It helps if you can bring real world applications into the classroom so it is meaningful to the students otherwise they feel like they are learning something just for the cause of learning.
While completing my teaching degree I taught for three years with troubled youth. Subjects were regents level and the subject was earth science and algebra or course I as it is called in NY. I have also taught Summer school at the Allen Center in South Kortright which can be a tough crowd to work with. During my undergraduate studies I tutored chemistry and biology. I also taught 8th grade physical science in Prince George Virgina.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through teaching at UNH and at Hartwick, I have developed a cogent teaching strategy. First, incorporation of everyday examples is critical for students. When students are shown how concepts discussed in class can be applied to everyday situations, they become more curious and gain better understanding of the material. Second, another of my teaching strategies is to emphasize comprehension of concepts instead of memorization. I caution students against memorizing equations for every individual condition or system. A third goal is to foster an atmosphere of approachability so that students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help both inside and outside of class.
For six years as a college professor or lecturer and five years as a graduate student teaching assistant, I have found teaching chemistry to be the most enriching facet of my scientific career. Of my many exp ... read more

I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. When/ if they struggle, I will be there to help set them back on track.

I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound foundation for future learning.
Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I have tutored secondary school students for the last 5 years in M ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a trained Science Teacher specializing in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I have over twelve years of High School teaching experience where I prepared students for external exams in Chemistry, Physics and Biology in my native country of Jamaica. The success rate was over 90%. I have tutored both adults (preparing for their GED and LPN exams in Math and English) and young adults (preparing for college exams) during the last four years.
Teaching is a skill that I have mastered and I have been successful at finding a fun way of getting students to learn. I like to introduce activities that are practical to the subject so the student understands the concept and therefore have a better understanding of the topic being covered. I am available to help anyone who needs help in finding academic success. I am patient, considerate and will use all available resources to get the stu ... read more

I am well skilled in a variety of instructional techniques and have successfully taughtstudents at all levels and of all abilities including students with learning disabilities. I have taught all four science specialties and am certified in NY to teach Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as General Science. More About This Tutor...

My approach to teaching/tutoring is simple. 1) Make an assessment of the student’s needs. This is a critical part of the methodology. The assessment of needs is based upon the student’s own statement of his abilities as well as empirical evidence of his performance and capabilities. 2) Develop a plan and design goals to meet those needs. Explain to the student the plan and the goals of how we are going to meet his/her needs. 3) Assess performance and adjust the plan and goals as needed. 4) Throughout the process, keep in mind that both the tutor and the student should have an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my experience comes from tutoring my younger siblings in math and science. In high school, I tutored my younger peers to do well on their regents exams. I was the valedictorian of my high school and I got 5's on many of my AP exams. I graduated college summa cum laude with a BS in Human Biology. I have an extensive background in science, but I also skilled at writing research papers.
My teaching style tends to reflect the learning style of the student. I like to use various forms of study materials to ensure the student has a good grasp on the subject. I usually review the material with the students first and then give them a quiz to see what they have learned and where there weaknesses are.

I love teaching and appreciate that subjects such as chemistry can be very difficult for young people. This difficulty is often present for two reasons. The first is that chemistry is not necessarily intuitive. It studies particles that are too small to see and cannot be observed directly. The second is that most of the basic theory is derived with very advanced math and most students are taking chemistry in the tenth or eleventh grade. This means that a conceptual understanding is crucial to success. I attempt to employ easy examples and analogies while patiently talking through problems and constructively giving students a chance to discover answers.
I am a graduate of Union College where I completed an advanced course of study in chemistry, participated in original research, and wrote an undergraduate thesis in order to obtain certification from the American Chemical Society. ... read more
