I believe all students have the ability to succeed. In my experience, the most important thing to remember is that all students learn differently, and sometimes what seems like an impossible task just needs to be presented differently for better understanding. Relating the material to situations and applications that are relevant and familiar to that particular student is a much more productive and beneficial way to have students retain information. I believe in teaching to the student’s style of learning. If convention works use it. Picking up on a student’s interest and intergrading the educational experience is essential. In other words if a student is interested in horses, the classroom should be moved to the barn. If math is the subject in question then measuring food would be an excellent way to learn fractions. In the past I have written several programs for my sons to use to learn both math and spelling. I find the instant response from the programs was a very effective tool for them to learn. I prefer to use fundations with the younger students. Learning each letter and its sound is a critical base. I also like the tapping method used with fundations. After learning each letter and its sound children can tap out each sound to figure out a word. There are trick words like: the, was, of...etc that we use flash cards for. This method worked well with my own son. He was being taught to read using pictures. Over christmas vacation during his kindergarten year we worked using fundations and he gaind four reading levels in a week and a half.
