I have been a self-employed Tutor since April, 2006. Special needs and home schooled students are welcomed. Nothing makes me happier than when I see the smiles on the faces of my students when they succeed rather than fail. I assist all students in skill building and creating a life-long love of learning. I provide on-going feedback to parents and am happy to work with the teachers of my students.
Whenever I can, I like to be very hands-on in my teaching my students. For example, once I was teaching my class about trees. I had them go outside and collect samples of bark which had fallen on the ground. Then we created a gigantic mural in my classroom and glued the pieces of bark to a tree we had drawn.

My experiences have given me opportunity to teach/tutor students of different ages, ethnicities, and socio-economic statuses. At all levels, however, I have realized that all students are capable of success. The key to being an effective teacher/tutor is finding a way to engage the student so that they are active in the learning process. This will most likely differ from student to student, however knowing the variety of methods to try is an advantage of those with experience. Whether discussions, writing, critical thinking questions, or modeling is used, students will respond differently. Being able to effectively evaluate which process works best for the student is what separates the good teachers from the great teaches.

My teaching style is highly personalized and tailored; firm, but friendly, has been an expression quite often used by administrators and parents to describe my demeanor. Once my students feel comfortable enough to truthfully reveal what they actually know and do not know, they realize that that is not a problem. No one knows everything.
