I believe above all that patience is key in teaching people of all ages. If the teacher's listening and communication skills are focused on the individual(s) being taught, the learner will let the teacher know when they are grasping and/or absorbing new material as well as when they(the student) reach their capacity. I believe that in learning it's important to pace one's self, allow the mind time to digest new material, and in finding areas of learning that spark passion. Although I think periodic breaks are important, I also believe in advancing somewhat quickly(according to the students' abilities) and in using real-time examples and experience to facilitate and solidify learning. I have been a classroom teacher for the last 18 years. I have taught in both Public Junior High and High Schools, as well as Private School. I love teaching science, and love to make the class exciting. It really gets students going when you use current events to teach and when kids debate issues, it is a great learning opportunity!
I think all children are driven to learn, and if directed with a little help, everyone can learn how science changes peoples lives. I feel more like a coach and less like a lecturer.
