A Little Bit About Me...

After high school I achieved a BS from George Peabody College for teacher, however did not teach for money until many years later after I received my MS. My work in clinical psychology has been mostly with children, the severely mentally ill, and abuse cases. My last full time position was teaching high school material in a one room school to students who were wards of the state. I taught anger management for the local courts for eight years. Now I teach parenting classes for divorcing couples for the Giles County court. I also occasionally teach a seminar for attorneys on body language.
As both a teacher and a counselor I have worked to develop a teaching style that is student focused. I love to help children learn! It is so rewarding to see the reaction of a child who suddenly understands what he has been trying to learn. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I began tutoring while I was still in high school. I earned my BS in Elementary Education in 1980. I have tutored students of all ages in different subjects. Most of my tutoring experience has been in math and reading. I have tutored students for all sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. My experience ranges a great deal and encompasses a lot of subject matter from K-12 Math to English and Literature. I was born to teach. From 10 years old I would teach my friends during summer vacations or whenever I could get them to play my favorite game, school, (Kids don't play school anymore). I enjoy helping students make the connections. I use a teaching approach that is hands on and generally seeks to find atudents learning style. A Little Bit About Me...

I think educators must take into account the different ways in which students learn. For instance, I've noticed that math students may have difficulty adding and subtracting fractions, but have no trouble whatsoever when I ask about dimes and quarters. If an instructor can build a bridge between new material and material the student has already mastered, the student's retention can significantly improve. By getting to know the interests and knowledge of each, I hope to discover bridges that will make learning an exciting and enjoyable process.
I graduated from Wake Forest in 2008, double-majoring in Mathematics and Physics.
