College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. I use the same method that I used on my son to achieve; we sit down, isolated, and concentrate on just what the problems are and how to achieve the end results. No messing around. I am not strict but I believe in having the child focus on just what the subject matter is. I had one student who I took from a 34 in Algbra to a 95 in one month but it took devotion from him and I. It was about 2 weeks in the session before he realized just how important his education was and then he took off, it was like a new person.
