A Little Bit About Me...

I like to determine my teaching style by first evaluating a child's current progress and learning style. Learning is a very individualized process, therefore, teaching must also be individual. I am a relaxed person, and I like to find a way to relate material to a child in a way that he/she will not only understand, but retain. Flash cards are great for some children, and other children will learn better with a pneumonic device, while still other learners will make up a song to remember the material.
As an English major, I spent all 4 years at my private instutition tutoring my fellow students, not only in English and writing courses, but in all academic classes in which I had received a grade of "A" or "B". 3 of my 4 years at Lindsey Wilson were spent in the Education department, as I originally wanted to be a high school English teacher. I match my teaching style to the learning style of each individual. My first session with the student is when I can determine whether their learning style is visual, audial, tactile, kinesthetic or a combination of these. I then write a prescription of study with the student that include several objectives and a timeline to achieve these goals. I work with the student to promote a sense of achievement and to build confidence for future learning.
Gaining and sharing knowledge has been a driving force throughout my life. Literacy is one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children. A Little Bit About Me...

In May 1997, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Lake Superior State University with a major in English Language and Literature and a minor in French Language and Literature. In May 1998, I graduated from Michigan State University with a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education. My experiences as a technical writer, web designer, and writing tutor have been invaluable and have strengthened my skills both as a writer and as a teacher of writing. In addition, I have taught French for one year in an urban school district, volleyball for four years, and private piano lessons for over ten years, affording me the opportunity to expand my repertoire of teaching modalities.
