I taught high school math for 3 years in a private school in the US then 2 years in a public school in an urban setting in Africa, where I adapted to teaching in another culture and language. I've had a deep enthusiasm for mathematics and physics since an early age, when my father, a professor of physics at Dartmouth College, introduced me to the beauty and elegance of the principles underlying these fields. During my junior and senior years at Hanover High, I took courses for credit in both areas, and continued those studies at Princeton University, although ultimately I settled in a degree in psychology. After graduation, I spent one year teaching high school level mathematics at The Mountain School in Vershire, Vermont, before beginning a career in software engineering.

My primary goal is to help the student understand the material so that it makes sense. My tutoring style involves asking lots of questions. The answers to these questions enable me to determine where the student's difficulties lie and how to address them. I don't believe that telling someone a fact or algorithm or the answer to a problem has much lasting value, so I attempt to lead the student to her or his own understanding by a series of carefully structured questions. This way the student actually learns the material and can be confident in solving whatever problems are presented, so their school work goes better. One of the most interesting aspects of teaching is how different people process information. Oft times it is difficult to find a teaching style or method that can be equally useful to people of different learning types. I have found that teaching methods common to experiential educators, common practice in such disciplines as SCUBA diving, First Aid/CPR, Martial Arts, Art, etc., can be successfully applied to virtually any academic discipline.
