I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I've also had my own SAT tutor and seen different programs and their styles, and I've chosen the one that I find the most effective.

I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of things, I believe in showing a student how a piece of literature--which may well include his or her own writing--is meaningful to himself. When this is accomplished, I have found that the "meaning" of the work provides the necessary impetus to motivate the student. Born and raised in upstate New York, I graduated from Cornell University in the spring of 2000 with a B.S. in Biology. In 2003, after a short stay in the biotechnology world, I moved west to work for an outdoor science school in Southern California. A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience tutoring anything from phonics to college level writing. I taught preschool for a year and a half at the Lion and Lamb Christian Preschool in Reno, NV. I have also tutored at the UNR Writing Center (when it still existed) during the Fall semester of '08. Since October 2008 I have tutored at the Reno Huntington Learning Center where I teach phonics all the way up to SAT and ACT Verbal test prep. While at UNR I took an upper division English Class entitled "How to Tutor an English Writer." I also have a minor of Spanish from UNR. I am by no means fluent in the language but can read and understand it fairly well. I am comfortable tutoring anything below advanced high school Spanish.
