Poetry is one of my top subjects!

I began learning German and French when I was 16 and in High School, then immediately continued my studies in College at University of Northern Colorado, where I am currently a double major in the two languages. I will be a Senior this year. Within my experience, I have traveled to Germany thrice, two of those times to study through the college. I have also studied abroad for French in Québec. My knowledge of the literature of these languages has been greatly extended within my studies at the University. I am the German Tutor for the University during the school year. I have been playing guitar for seven years, and have taught lessons at times throughout. I have basic music theory training. I have also worked as a paraprofessional for students with disabilities for six summer school sessions, aiding them with academics and behavioral skills.

Presently, I teach Intensive English for International Students at the University of Northern Colorado, including grammar, reading, vocabulary, computer skills, writing, and speaking/listening classes.

My style of teaching includes visual explanation (white board or chalk board), oral discussion, and hands-on manipulation when ever possible. I try to use as many teaching styles as possible as not all students learn via the same means. My style is also fexible based on the student I am instructing (age or handicaps). I believe the best way to teach science is to make it a fun and inquisitive experience.

I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am currently working on my Masters degree in Education and have had refresher courses in the areas of study outside of my initial degree. I love working with students and have taken courses specifically in test prep.
I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of th ... read more

I focus on the individual first - her style of learning, what makes her mind tick, how she responds to different methods of teaching. I believe that people are treated fairly by being treated individually. I also believe that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I strive to set an example of genuine care and concern for the learner.
During the last five years I have taught others how to use social media, viral marketing, search engine optimization and social media marketing more effectively. I have been recognized by peers as a leader in the emerging space of social knowledge, which embraces a holistic approach to the social interactions an organization has internally and with customers and partners.

When I focused on my degree at the University of Northern Colorado, I found a love beyond writing, I fell in love with language, its morphology, and how powerful a simple punched statement can be in helping you persuade, inform, and move readers. There is strength in a good writer, and the greatest lesson I learned was that you are not born a great writer. We expect perfection the first time, and when it is not perfect we lose hope—and that is a fallacy. Good writing is hard work, revising, editing, and sets of eyes other than your own. During the last three years I have been helping students understand this in the classroom.
I absolutely love working with kids. My strength is teaching secondary level students, and I believe as a teacher you must forge a connection to help a student struggling outside of his area of expertise. You establish trust by building relationships, letting ... read more

I have experience as both a teacher and a tutor. I graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in English/Secondary Education. Throughout my years in college I learned theories of education, observed in classrooms and student taught at both the middle school and high school level. After graduating college in 2003, I taught 9th grade English for 2 years in a charter school in Houston, TX. After I relocated to Chicago, IL, I entered the corporate sector; however, I continued to volunteer as a tutor for 2 years. Given my past experiences, I have had the opportunity to work with students at many different levels and have tutored in various subject areas.

My teaching style could be described as modified Montessorian, in an attempt to appeal to all the senses, and to affect the learning channels of each student as a unique individual. Encouragement is lavished on even the adult students, and not all errors are equally vital to correct on an immediate basis. One observing any one of my classes could feel definitely "drawn in" if so desired.
My experience in paid teaching (excluding numerous volunteer and non-paid opportunities) range from teaching Vietnamese refugee "boat-people" children (news film footage archived by Vanderbilt University) in 1975 through years of Orange County (CA) adult education in English as a Second Language to my present duties in metro Denver of teaching immigrant adults in English as a Second Language. I am also fairly fluent in Spanish; I took classes in both high school and at the university level, and spent a summer volunteering in Costa Rica in a Spanish-only village. My studies provided me with a solid education of many different cultures and traditions, and as a Teaching Assistant I needed to work with people of different backgrounds and lifestyles. I was there as a resource for students, and enjoy teaching and working with others.
