I developed my passion for teaching others from a a pre-college program I was in called Upward Bound. I learned study skills, time management and other skills that helped me excel in college. After college graduation,i obtained a tutoring position with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.I served as a mentor as well guiding them through the difficulties of high school and applying for college and financial aid. As an undergrad student at the University of Wisconsin, I worked as a writing assistant in the Academic Resource Center assisting students with reading, writing and grammar. A Little Bit About Me...

For over 15 years I've taught children from kindergarten through eighth grade in various settings. The majority of years I worked with first through fourth graders so I have accumulated experience in reading, math and language arts. I've spent several summers working through an area college helping grade school children make progress in areas they found difficult in the classroom environment. I've also spent two years tutoring in a classroom setting.
If I had to put a label on my teaching style, I would call it interactive. I believe children learn best if they are actively involved in the learning process. Free and unconstrained autobiographical writing is one of the best ways to coax a student insecure about his or her writing skills into putting into words intense experiences from their own life. I tell my students to just tell me in their own words what they are trying to say. When they speak aloud, the words flow, and then I say, "There is your opening sentence right there. Quick! Write it down." At other times, I ask them to pretend that they are really someone else, an actor in a television show, for example, and I have them imagine that the character, not they themselves, are speaking. This releases the student to let go of inhibitions and let the film roll "for the character" and then they stop focusing on themselves.
