I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. I was a substitute teacher from my first year of college (99) to about 2005. I did all subject and all grades. I also worked at an out of school suspension program so the students still were learning and getting their work done. I also worked at the center of disability services helping and working with the disabled students in everyday school activities.
I like working in small groups and 1-on-1 is even better. I like to get to know them, become a friend/buddy with the student so they feel comfortable with me. In the past, with good and trouble students, this has worked and it seems like they don't want to let me down and that they do trust me and start trusting what I am telling them and enjoying it.
