First, I would review with the student the kinds of learning he or she had had success with and adjust the following to the student's learning style. For "Writing Research Papers" I would start with an excellent published paper and then I would review the student's work with explanation. For "U. S. Government" I would incorporate the skill of outlining and review the student's outlines until the important material was included and learned For "Statistics" there is nothing like doing problems. I would start with an explanation of the chapter's subject matter and work with the student in doing problems and discussing the method and meaning.

I have been an "instructor"-teacher for over 15 years. I teach math, economics, finance, business, and management for several colleges. I have been a Boy Scoutmaster and merit bade counselor and have worked with youth for over 15 years. I have always been given very high marks as an instructor with many comments on my positive energy and help for students. I have an applied mathematics minor so I would be able to teach algebra, geometry, trig, and introductory calculus.
I am a question-answer type of teacher. I like to demonstrate, have them do, answer questions, clear up ambiguities, and then test or at least check to insure learning and understanding. I have a style of quiet, but firm expectations. I have a great amount of patience. I will do best with high school and college age students, and on occasion, with more mature middle school students.

My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a master's degree in Economics and undergraduate degrees in both Mathematics and Economics. In my courses I have generally been one of the strongest students and I would regularly help my peers. I really enjoyed this informal tutoring for several reasons. I like explaining things, and I like helping out my friends. I also found that when I explained a concept to a fellow student that I developed a deeper understanding myself.
