My teaching style depends upon the student I am tutoring. I totally coach the student in a manor which best befits that student. Since no two students are alike, I do what is best for each individual person. I want the students I tutor to succeed, and I love passing on the knowledge that I have, so helping the students discover for themselves new and interesting things is a joy to me. I love being able to make a difference in people's lives through knowledge. I am a retired FBI Agent, with both a Bachelor of Science and a Juris Doctorate. I love teaching kids. All kids can are different in the way they learn. you need to be able to recognize those kids who are auditory learners, and hands on learners and be able to make a good balance of both so both kids may benefit. I like to set goals for each tutor session weather it be something like learning the alphabet or knowing you first ten multiplication facts. You then need to set one long term goal for that child to reach. this way each day they feel as if they have succeeded and learned something. As an undergraduate student at Utah State University, I spent two years working as a Undergraduate Teaching Fellow, a Teacher's Assistant, and a Supplemental Instructor. I taught labs and assisted students with understanding information in the subject areas of Microbiology, Human Anatomy, and Human Physiology. I held review sessions, created tests and quizzes, and met with students individually or in groups to answer questions, review tests, or improve study habits. After finishing my Masters Degree in Education I taught one year in a private school then opened my own business tutoring primarily homeschool students during the school year. The students I have worked with are primarily ages 11-18, but my experience with my own children includes the primary grades. I have tutored most subjects including reading, writing, science, history and math (through algebra). I believe that children are born smart. Some of them have special learning challenges and some have been taught to believe that they are not smart. By treating children as though they are intelligent and providing encouragement and learning opportunities, I have seen children grow and progress in almost astonishing ways. I graduated from Hampshire College with a degree in Anthropology and Photography. These degrees required rigorous researching including an intensive semester of independent field study. My field study culminated in a 70 page thesis and correlated gallery exhibition. In addition, I have extensive experience composing and organizing shorter research papers on variety of subjects and laboratory reports. Over the past year I have worked as an environmental educator with the Park Service and Fish and Wildlife Service introducing mixed audiences to a variety of topics related to geological processes and natural and cultural history. Previously, I have worked with elementary aged students as a tutor with the America Reads program to promote literacy. I believe the most important trait a teacher can have is enthusiasm as it can be contagious and get students to completely engage a subject.
