More About This Tutor...

My teaching style is very hands on. I understand that students learn in a variety of ways. Some are hands on, and need to actually get their hands on the project to understand. Some learn by seeing it. They have to see it and then maybe write it and learn by visualizing. Some learn by listening. They can listen to a lecture and hang on to every word. I understand that all children are different, and therefore lessons have to be taylored to fit each child's learning needs. I love children and enjoy teaching. When I was teaching in a public school, I was very well liked by both children and parents. I was there for every child; not just the good ones. My goal was to take the child that other teachers talked negatively about in the lunchroom and show them that I had no problems with that same child. Teachers should not stereotype. Every child equally deserves a quality education.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with all age groups. When working with older students I typically use a teaching style that involves asking the student a series of questions such that the student ends up answering their own question through deductive reasoning. I have found that a student utilizing this pedagogical method not only tends to more effectively remember the answers to the questions but understands the thought process that allowed them to arrive at those answers. I have also found that students are better able to pay attention for longer amounts of time with this active learning style as opposed to simply listening to a lecturer.
I first gained experience as a tutor as a senior at Westminster College where I volunteered as a science tutor in the college's learning center. I spent my time tutoring students in the subjects of biology and chemistry. I graduated as valedictorian of my ... read more

I finished my phD from Boulder (Colorado) and worked for Kuwait University, Kuwait EPA, and ITT technical college for the last ten years. As a teacher for ITT college and Kuwait University, I would bring ten years of experience as an Engineer teacher. I taught six undergraduate and three graduate courses. My strength and experience as an Environmental Engineer consultant is making engineering interesting for students, understandable, and enjoyable—bridging the gap between technical information and student’ needs.
I find my utmost happiness in turning on the common "light-bulb" on top of my students' heads. Their understanding of the subject is my key objective. When I first came to teaching in 1997, my teaching philosophy was based on 4 essential principles. First, I try to care for every student as if they were my sons and daughters at some times. Second,I want to provide a model ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate I tutored in the help center of WVSU. My last semester I had to choose between Biology and Chemistry, due to a schedule conflict, and I chose Chemistry. After graduating, I worked toward my PhD at Montana State University for two years. I worked my way through teaching labs, and completed 19 credit hours, before I had to move home for family reasons. I also worked in the help center during the day and held weekly study groups in the evenings.
I believe that there are no boring subjects, only boring teachers. I teach so others may learn to find interest. My heart races when I help someone learn. We are always learning, and I will always be a student. I am able to relate to people on that level, regardless of subject level. No one is born knowing this stuff, we learn through life. To teach is to learn. It must be nice to teach to teach. This is my goal.

My passion in life is to work with children. I love helping children learn and to see the "light bulb" go off in their head. I believe that all children can learn, but they learn in many different ways. My motto for teaching is "Learning to discover, and discovering to learn." I can sit and lecture on a subject for hours, but only when the student connects with the material will learning take place. I also believe in making learning relevant and interesting to the student. All students have the potential to grasp concepts, but sometimes they just need someone to be patient and encourage them. I am that person.
As a recent graduate of West Virginia State University, I am very focused on helping children learn to be successful students and productive citizens. I am an Elementary Education major and I have been working with children since I was 15 years old. I have been a swimming, g ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After college graduation in 2006, I subsitute taught for a year in Pennsylvania for a year before moving to Maryland to persue a permanent teaching career. I taught technology education in grades 6-8 before moving to West Virginia to start a family. My degree is in the field of technology education, but I also hold an additional certification in middle school math. I feel confident in my abilities to tutor math of all ages, as well as physics classes.
I believe every child learns differently, and that the presentation of information must vary on a constant basis. In order to keep attention of learners, new techniques and methods must be constatnly implemented to actively teach students. I feel that students learn best when they trust their instructor, and feel secure in there environment.

Math is learned by doing, but in attempting to do something you haven't really learned yet you're probably going to get stuck. A math tutor's job is to get you unstuck (or in some cases get you started). Sometimes that's just pointing out mistakes, and sometimes there's a weak spot in your background that needs cleared up before you can go any further. It's not easy, but I think anyone can learn math, even advanced math, but you have to start with a solid foundation. My teaching approach for other subjects is somewhat different, but still mostly consists of alternating between explaining/demonstrating and assisted practice.
I have earned two bachelor degrees from West Virginia University Institute of Technology, a BS in Mathematics and a BS in Computer Science. I received an A in every math class that I took including but not limited to statistics, linear algebra, multi-variable ca ... read more
