In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. This is why tutoring is so important, in my opinion. This is the core of the approach I take to tutoring my peers, presenting ideas to professors, and to teaching younger students.

My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. The curriculum I've studied at St. John's includes 4 years of language (2 Ancient Greek, 2 French); 3 years of laboratory science (physics, chemistry, biology, electricity & magnetism, etc.); 4 years of mathematics (including geometry, algebra, and calculus); and well as 4 years of "The Great Books of Western Civilization" tutorial wherein I have studied philosophy, literature, theology, political theory, and economics. I have always loved to teach and have been told by my children that I should have been a teacher. When it comes to math I have found that most people who have trouble with math have simply missed some fundamental along the way. It is extremely rewarding to figure out what that is and fill in that hole. I teach by breaking problems down and asking easier questions that lead to the answer. I am good at finding many ways to approach the same problem while I search for the way that clicks with the student. One of my children has ADD so I have learned to recognize when that focus switch turns off and have found ways to bring the focus back. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science. I worked with the teachers to determine when assignments were due and worked on planning with the students to plan out how and when to work on projects to complete them on time. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a B.S. in Computer Science. I also have 3 years as a substitute teacher as well as 3 in the semiconductor field. I come form a family of educators (mother, uncle, great aunt). I college, I tutored many of my friends in higher mathematics (one of which attained a PhD in Electrical Engineering recently). I also recently did some volunteer work in Michigan tutoring Somalian refugees in Mathematics.
