Throughout my academic career as an undergraduate I strove for excellence in all that I did. I earned two bachelors in English and Women's Studies and consider myself very well versed in both areas. Throughout my undergraduate career I was also heavily involved in extracurricular activities related to my majors. I was also involved with a volunteer program called Alternative Breaks in which I was given the opportunity to help educate peers as well as children.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style would be best described as creative and improvisational. Because I work with students from such varied backgrounds, I believe that the best method is one that allows for flexibility and at the same time incorporates lessons from several fields at once. For example, in both my GED and ESOL courses I incorporate music into my lesson plans. I find that music is an excellent avenue to explore contemporary topics that can then lead to essay topics. At the same time, song lyrics are poetry and can be studied as such.
As a student in the PhD program at the University of Florida, I have been very involved in academic pursuits. However, this personal endeavor reaches beyond my own experience as a student and extends into my professional work as an educator. I have been working in the field of Adult Education for students pursuing their GED diploma as well as Instructing co ... read more

Students usually direct my teaching style because I am present mainly to facilitate learning and to act as a guide.

Although my chosen field of study is history, my passion is for education and learning. While earning both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, I have acquired an essential skill set for working in the academic world, which includes excellent writing, reading, and critical-thinking skills, in addition to a proficiency in Spanish acquired through years of classroom study and travel in Latin America. In addition to two years of teaching at the college level, I also have experience working one-on-one with individual students to help them develop their skills in writing and critical thinking.
I believe that good teaching, like quality learning, comes with hard work. A Little Bit About Me...

First,I show my students I deeply care how they feel about learning. I help them identify their blocks to learning and success and help put them at ease. I know how to adapt my style to the particular age I am working with. I am very patient. I know proven strategies to help students master basic skills and more complex skills, using their style of learning. I will recognize pretty early on their zone of mastery, and capacity to cope, so they don't get too frustrated or too bored. I will use whatever modality I can find (creatively and safely) to help bring understanding. I am a cheerleader and am excited when students gain mastery of a topic that at first seemed overwhelming.
I have worked with children and youth pre-school - 12th grade since 1982. I have done some literacy instruction with adults. I have been recognized as an outstanding mentor to disadvantaged youth. I ... read more

I feel confident in developing a lesson plan that can be diverse enough to meet each and every child’s gifts and disadvantages. Read More About Steven E...

As a life long learner, the parent of two school age children, and a business professional, I continue to be intrigued and encouraged by the willingness of students to learn. As an adult student earning a bachelors and masters degree, I gained a passion for education as I was not the typical college student. Rather, I was a very typical high school student, and later a part time college student, who was not prepared for college. My passion is to bring out the best learner any student can be, plain and simple. Through my work as a school board member and Junior Achievement volunteer classroom teacher, I have expanded my passion for education.
As indicated previously, I believe all children can learn. More importantly, parents and teachers can learn a great deal from their children, specifically by listening and recognizing what motivates, excites, and draws the child in. I am e ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe that every child can learn. It is up to the teacer to determine his/hers learning style and adapt to it. I am a strong proponent of active learning, where the student is involved in the material using more than one of the senses enabling better recognition, recall and understanding. I also believe that every student needs and deserves one-on-one time with the teacher to address any concerns on the lesson and to answer any questions.I am very patient and will go over material until it is comprehended, using a variety of examples.
I have had some minor experiences as a teacher’s aide. Some of these included working one-on-one with children needing assistance in 7th grade language arts classes. I worked under the tutelage of two 7th grade language arts teachers. I prepared lessons, taught classes, and assessed student progress, supervised by the cooperating teachers. ... read more
